My poor baby girl!  No wonder she hasn't eaten well for the past couple of days!  I knew she hasn't been herself, but just couldn't figure out what was wrong.  She wasn't running a fever, though, and wasn't licking herself and doing anything strange around the litter box.  But last night she started licking and licking at her backside, and when I took a quick peek, I could see something wasn't right, but still couldn't tell exactly what was wrong, just knew we needed to make a visit to the Vet today.

Lo and behold, she had a ruptured anal gland, and even though it had drained substantially already, they had to drain it even more.  She was such a brave girl!  Now she has a raw spot about the size of a quarter on her backside, and we're to try to put warm compresses on it, as well as Derma-Vet ointment.  We'll try, but I'm not holding my breath!  They gave her a Convenia shot rather than Clavamox, and we'll follow-up with another appointment next week to make sure the wound is healing properly.  While we were at it, we went ahead and did her annual exam, complete with senior blood work, etc.  $205 just for the blood panel!
Geesh!!  I mean, it's necessary, but good grief.

that everything comes back AOK, other than the obvious higher WBC because of the abcess.  (and probably slightly higher BUN because of being on a raw diet).

Well, you wouldn't even know anything was wrong if you couldn't see that red spot on her behind now
.  Thank goodness she is back to eating (ravenous, actually), and at first she fought the compresses, but last night she just "sat" there and it seemed like she didn't even notice, then when I put the ointment on, she didn't even lick it off
.  Plus the wound is already much smaller, so she's obviously healing up nicely.  What a relief!

absolutely any outside area of cut or bite or some sort of irritation UNLESS IT IS THE EYE! put some  collidal silver on it few times a day, it heals things the vets flush everyday and use everything under the sun on that does not heal. i can't put up a link yet so google colloisforlife and the appropriate site will show. one other person on her: ambermay will send you a link if you ask her about it too. it save her cat's life!!!!!!!!!! just put it on the hurt part, never in eyes. it's safe too.

Senior Panel came back, and her Creatinine is slightly elevated
.  2.6, with the norm topping out at 2.4.  So...they want to take a urine sample on our follow-up visit tomorrow to test for protein levels (I think is what she said).  Otherwise, everything looked really good, including BUN, potassium, etc.  But this has me scared, especially since we lost Sven
earlier this year to kidney disease.

Sally, make sure the vet knows she eats raw.... Higher levels iof creatinine, BUN and hematocrit are observed in bloodwork of raw-fed dogs and cats. There are studies on it - it doesn´t mean kidney trouble, but it does mean that the diet needs to be taken into consideration - the baseline might be a bit higher for our little ones.

I made a point of telling her so she would know the BUN might be higher, and reminded her again when she called with the numbers.  So the creatinine would be expected to be higher too?  Her BUN was 34, with creatinine of 2.6.  Does that follow right along with a raw diet?  Maybe this Vet simply doesn't know.  She wasn't our usual Vet, since this was an emergency, and Dr. Christina doesn't work on Fridays.  (but I read on google that with a petite cat (Callie is less than 8 lbs) that creatinine might be lower than higher)

There were some studies, in dogs, that showed both higher, along with hematocrit. They were calling for further studies to possibly elevate the baseline for raw fed pets..... So, yes, something to keep in mind, as some vets will jump the gun into kidney troubles when it isn´t the case....

i just mailed amber may my best friend about this. i have a feeling the colidial silver water might help this but i wanted to ask her first! this is a delicate place on the furbabie's body!i will let you know her reply...
No need, as she's all healed up!  But thanks anyway.  BTW, when it first happened, I DID ask the Vet about using Coloildal Silver for it, and she wasn't familiar with it, but was familiar with using another form of it for burns.  I forget the name, but think it's really the same thing, because she said it was a liquid, which this is, and had silver in the name.

Oh, and they did go ahead and do the urine check, and everything was perfect.  My pocketbook is just somewhat lighter now.  But since she is DH's little princess (he ADORE's her....well, I do to, but she is really his girl
) we wanted everything checked, even after they drew the urine and did a quick check and said the numbers were good, he still wanted it sent to the lab, etc.  (better safe than sorry, so I can't fault him)
