My boyfriend has brought home a kitten that is between 1 to 14 days old since his eyes are still closed.  I think it is less than a week old and I have been trying to bottle feed the kitten.  I read to keep the kitten on its stomach which I did, but he wouldn't suck on the nipple.  I used a dropper and got a little bit in him, but I am not sure it is getting enough.  I need some advice on what I should be doing.

He has it nice, warm and comfortable?

If he is too weak to take even from dropper, you can try to boost some extra energy by  smearing a little dextrose ("grape sugar") on his gum. Or white Caro syrup.  Or honey.

What food are you trying to give him?

I understand you do already know quite a lot about the basics of feeding, by what you are telling you are doing.

There are sites about handrearing orphans.

A couple of them are www.kitten-rescue.com

http://www.fabcats.org/owners/kittens/handrearing.html

There is also one good at Messybeasts.,

this I think.  http://www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm

Good luck!

At a week old he needs feeding every 2 hours and should consume about 2-3ml per feeding. I prefer a syringe (needless of course) over a bottle. Make sure to weigh him every day too, good links posted above with lots of useful info on hand raising.

Thank you for the advice.  I finally got him drinking formula from a bottle and he is drinking about 3 tablespoons in 24 hours.  His eyes opened up yesterday so he is older than I thought which is good.  Now, I haven't been able to get him to poo.  He pees with no problem and I try to get him to go after I feed him.  He has gained 1 oz since yesterday.  He did have some poo on him Friday night, so I am hoping that he is going but I just don't see it.  I hope I am doing this right.  He is purring so I think I am.

Thank you for the advice.  I have him drinking now, but the pooping is a new issue.  He has once, but it was on his fur.  I stimulate his bottom area and he pees without a problem.  I am wondering if i need to give me pedilyte with his formula.  He sleeps throughout the night without wanting to eat.  I just want to make sure he is okay.  He has gained 1 oz. in the last 24 hours too.  I think that is good.  If there is any advice on making him poo, I would be grateful.

What kind of formula are you feeding him? KMR will constipate kittens nearly always. As far as what to add to it, you will have to wait for the 2 previous posters to check in again. They live on the other side of the world from me so give them time. If he's only pooped one time and it's been many days you may have to take him to the vet Monday morning for an enema. You can get them to show you how to do it if he gets constipated again.

You may dilute the kmr some, to lessen the risk of constipations.  3 teaspoons a day sounds not much, but as he did gained one oz - should be enough. Of course, we must take in account no poo, so perhaps just half of the gainment is new body mass.

Before you rush in to the vet, begin with phoning.  He can prob give some extra advices..

My kitten which we are hand raising seems to either be sneezing or coughing.  It does happen after drinking formula which I understand could be from too much formula being sucked down or enhaling.  Can this lead to pneumonia or am I overreacting?

Yes, KMR.  I did dilute this last batch of formula.  I will dilute it a little more.  I know am wondering about what sounds like a cough or sneeze he know has when I hold him.  I was thinking it was the soap I use when I wash my hands, but now wondering if he is getting too much formula at one time.  We only found him three days ago and I am a worried 'mother hen'.

He may be choking a little as he feeds. Are you holding him right? Always feed kittens on their tummies, not like a human baby on their backs, or they may breathe in the milk. Good luck with him

She says in her very 1st post that she's feeding him on his stomach. It shouldn't be that.

He may be very sensitive to tje hand soap you are using. Try using baby wash to wash your hands, or plain dawn dish soap.

@BigPerm20- I thought that too about the soap and also fabric softener.  It dawned on us yesterday that it could be the fabric softener and my boyfriend was thinking the hand soap too.  i have washed a load of towels in just a little Arm and Hammer laundry soap.  I will change the hand soap and possibly the laundry soap to a mild soap.  Thank you for confirming what we suspected.

Still no poo, but I am taking him to the vet tomorrow to see what is going on with him just to give me a piece of mind.  I have diluted the formula so I was hoping that would work.

Yes, I have been feeding him since we first found him on his tummy.  I was still thinking he may have enhaled the formula.  Thank you for the advice and words of wisdom.  I have three other cats, but this is the first time I have had to be the 'mommy cat' and I just want him to do well.
