I took my 3 cats in for day boarding at the vets because of fumigation in my apartment.
I decided to have Abby's senior panel done while she was there, and also had her blood pressure checked.
Her blood work came back great! They are still awaiting her thyroid test (they send that out), but the vet didn't think there was anything to worry about. I think they had the T4 already and it was only slightly abnormal.
I told her that if she is hyperthroid that I won't do to her what I did to Chynna, and that was to give her that Tapazole medication. It is awful stuff and is very hard on their kidneys. I told her that in the event she needed thyroid treatment that I would be taking her to Saskatchewan for the Iodine-131 treatment because it would preserve her kidney function and deal with the issue permanently. She also mentioned that they could do surgery. But anyway, she really doesn't think it will come to that, at least not yet.
In January Abby had surgery to remove a large cyst on her head that was broken open and bleeding. Her blood work at that time showed some concerns and the vet was worried about FEV (I think that is what it was). I told her that it was likely due to the massive amount of blood loss from the cyst. And I was right. Her blood work is 100% normal except for the T4. Even her renal function is well within normal limits.
Her blood pressure is also normal. I learned with Chynna how important it is to keep an eye on a cat's blood pressure, so now whenever I take them in for a check up I ask for a blood pressure to be done, even though it does cost $45! You would think that it would be included in the price of the exam!
The major concern is her teeth. She does need a dental. She has some dental disease in her back molars. I've been putting off having a dental done on her because they are not cheap here! I read about people in the USA paying $100 or so for a dental on a cat, here it's about $400.00 or more. Chynna's was $700.00 (actually $1,200 but they capped it at $700). So I really can't afford that type of expense right now. February is dental month and they give a 20% discount, so I'm going to wait until then. Of course if she runs into problems, I'll move that date up.
So anyway, my 14 year old baby is doing just fine!!!! *Yay!!!*
