When we took Pepsi and Koopa in for their shots, we asked the vet to check for ear mites since they were scratching quite a bit at their ears.  Turns out that they both have ear mites, and the vet prescribed Revolution, a one time treatment and advised that we clean out their ears prior to treatment.  My question is, how exactly do I proceed?  She told me to buy ear cleaner at a petsmart - is there a specific kind I should use?  How exactly do I clean them - they don't even like me looking in their ears!  As far as the Revolution is concerned, should I worry that they may try to groom each other and ingest some?  And will cleaning and treating with Revolution get rid of them for good?

I've never had huge success with cleaning out a cat's ears. But get some ear wash (any kind that says it's OK for cats. But don't get an ear mite treatment--don't want to overdo it), squeeze some in each ear, then rub a cotton ball around in there as much as you can. If you do that for 3-4 days in a row, it should help. Try to get somebody else to hold the kitten by the scruff while you do it, that'll be much easier. Keep doing it once or twice a week until the ears look nice and clean.

One dose of Revolution has always worked for me. But another treatment in 3 weeks would probably be a good idea to be sure. Try to keep the kitties from licking it off each other. . .keeping them separate until it's dry (usually 30 minutes or so) wouldn't be a bad idea. But I've never had any trouble with kitties licking it off each other. They put bitter taste in it so they don't lick very much.

Will this get rid of the mites "for good"? Maybe. This depends on their risk factors. If they're inside-only, you don't have a dog, you don't bring home strays, and don't work at a shelter or vet clinic, probably. Mites don't travel as much as fleas do. But sometimes they just show up anyway. I'm very thankful for Revolution :D.

If the Revolution doesn't take care of the mites, ask the vet about Acarexx.

Revolution is a great thing for cats and kittens.  It is made to absorb into the skin in a matter of minutes.  anything else that is

on their fur will evaporate.  Don't use a q-tip at all in their ears.  what you want to do is take a warm wash cloth (wrung out) and

gently wipe their ears with it.  you can "scruff" them with one hand and wipe with the other if you are talented :)

Should we do the 3-4 days of cleaning and wait until the ears are completely clean *before* applying the Revolution?

Nah, you can apply the Revolution now. It's not like most ear mite meds. . .it spreads over the body, absorbs into the bloodstream, etc.
