Rick faxed in our cabinet order last week. I'm so excited about the new cabinets! We talked to the kitchen design guru; his company installs cabinets and I think we're just going to go with them for installation. That way, if anything happens, it's their dime. Oak cabinets with a caramel finish.

The electrician is coming this week to start moving plugs and switches to their new places. We're going to be adding lighting above the new cabinets and below the cabinets as well, so he has a bit of work to do.

Talking to the contractors this week, too, about the new window and the sun tunnels, then we'll order those. I can get the sun tunnels from Lowe's at a cheaper price than the builders supply company in town and it's the exact same brand as what the supply company carries.

I've been looking at countertops as dear Richard doesn't want to wait until next year; he says he doesn't want to look at new cabinets and the old counterop for another year.  A new countertop also means a new sink and faucet. They were ordered, too, and should get here soon....we'll have to go over to the store to pick them up. We went with a black granite double sink (undermount) and a high arch faucet; both are from Home Depot. But I'm still dithering about countertop material, although I'm really thinking about just going with a laminate type, probably a Wilsonart. There are some really pretty laminates on the market and it's changed a lot since we built our house almost 30 years ago. And I like some of the edges you can use with a laminate....although edgin can get pretty expensive. The island is definitely going to be granite, though.....I just don't know what yet. So many options to choose from now; I'm having a difficult time making up my mind. I wasn't really planning on new countertops this year and thought I'd have more time to choose.

The big thing is going to be trying to box all the kitchen stuff up! I'm trying to do some extra cooking and freezing, so that we have meals that we can either bake or microwave because I don't want to be doing take-out for a month. As long as the weather is nice, we can grill, too. And if we don't have water in the kitchen for awhile, we can heat water on the grill for washing dishes.

Rick will be leaving for Oregon around the end of September for a week or so. That will an interesting time!

Sounds like it's going to be beautiful.  Best of luck and look forward to seeing pictures when it's finished.

That sounds great!!  My in-laws have 2 of those sun tunnels and they help so much!  My nephew used to pretend they were gunner-hatches or something like that he called them.
The kid has had a military fascination as long as I have known him (he's 15 now; so maybe hes over it.  I have to ask him!

Gunner-hatches!!
 That's cute!

Thanks, guys. I'm really excited about everything, even though I know it's going to take awhile to get it all coordinated. People have told me to expect no kitchen for anywhere from 4-6 weeks until it's all completely finished. Depending on how things go. Like I said, the electrician is coming this week to start work. When the contractors come to start work, I'll have to start removing cabinets to make room for the new window. They'll do the sun tunnels then, too. They said it would take at least four weeks for the cabinets to get here.....we need to get the old cabinets out, get that darn closet out, do more electrical work behind the walls for lighting, fix any drywall, then paint. Life will be.....interesting. (I don't handle chaos well either; I tend to get a little stressed when I have to look at messes for a long time. Especially with seven cats in the house. We're liable to find Tabby inside the wall somewhere!)

No, we're not going to refinish the cabinets. I actually bought the Rustoleum cabinet refinishing kit back in June to do them (we were going to start the project around the middle of July), but never got the paint tinted or anything. We talked and talked and then talked some more. And that's when Rick decided to check in at work to see about a discount and how to go about ordering the cabinets there. It all worked out and it was much, much cheaper than what we thought it would be. And well, since we were doing new cabinets anyway, we talked about enlarging the window. And then new countertops, which led to a new sink and faucet. And it became a major kitchen redo.

I was able to return the refinishing kit to Lowes, since we hadn't tinted the paint or anything.

That sounds daunting, Pam, but just think how great it'll be when it's finished! Cooking ahead is a great plan, especially with all the stuff coming in from the garden right now.
