Hi,

I adopted a 12 year old domestic short hair mix yesterday. I was told to feed him wet science diet brand food. According to their instructions I should feed him 2.5-3 cans a day. I fed him 1 yesterday and he didn't touch it, but when I woke up in the morning it was gone. I went to sleep at about 11:30 and gave him that food at about 7 when we got home from the shelter. The next morning I gave him another can at about 7am. He was clearly begging for it too. At about 10:30-11am which is j4 hours or so later he was begging for even more food. He was even looking his empty bowl. He is a large cat, 14 pounds according to the shelter so I don't want to overfeed him. At about 1:30pm I gave him half a can of food aiming to give him 2.5 cans for the day. However, just 5 minutes after he finished that he begged for more!. I gave him a couple of handfuls of dry food. He ate half and 20 minutes later ate some more. When he stepped away from the bowl again I took the dry food away because it seemed like he was eating too much. He is still begging for more food In fact he nearly opened the plastic box with the dry food in it. I plan on feeding him one more can of wet food at about 6:30pm because that's when I'm usually home from work. So how much should I feed this big guy? Did I feed him too much? I'm trying to get him to shed a couple of pounds. Or could his weight be normal?

First I just wanna say how awesome that you adopted a senior kitty!

What type/flavour of SD is it? Would that be the 3oz size can? Is that what he was getting at the shelter?

Hard to say without seeing him, but maybe once he's settled into his new home for a while, he could have a check-up and the vet could give you some input on his ideal weight.

Amazing job adopting a senior kitty! I'm so so happy for both you and him. It is definitely very hard for senior cats to find homes and you have done such an amazing thing adopting him, I'm so so happy right now for you and kitty! Round of applause!

Science Diet isn't very good for kitties, it is very low quality (BUT when you look at the price it seems like you are paying for a higher quality food) and contains a lot of grains, corns, and fillers. I think the best thing, especially since this kitty is a senior, is a grain free, real meat canned food diet. I would check out Weruva, Nature's Variety, EVO (especially good since it is higher fat, which senior kitties need) and By Nature. Canned food brands like these can actually be cheaper than purchasing Science Diet kibble! Try to cut out kibble altogether or just make it a snack.

I would feed him three times a day (breakfast, snack and dinner) and average about 6oz of food per day or more. If he is going to be eating Weruva, you can feed him a bit more if he gets hungry because it is lower in calories and senior kitties need more calories than adult cats. :D
