My husband was walking his cat Tophel with the harness outside in the back yard, and he spotted a puppy under the deck. He brought Tophel in and tried to approach him to read the tag on his collar but the puppy ran away fast, down the block and disappeared.
Fast forward a week and I went outside to soak up a bit of sun and was sitting on the bench when I saw something with black and brown fur lying on our grass. (We have a lot of garden beds with tall plants so he was hidden).
Anyway, I got closer and it was the same puppy but he looked really lethargic. I talked softly to him and since it was hot I brought him a bowl of water, but he growled a little when I got closer so I went inside and called the SPCA. He looked like a cross between a pit bull and a rottweiler, but I don't know dogs. He was black with the brown eyebrows and mouth, but had a really squared jaw like a pitt bull. He was also not neutered, so I backed off right away.
While we were waiting for the SPCA, I thought he had left but when I went out, he came out from behind the shed, so I gave him a little cat food that had been okay'ed by the woman at the shelter.
A lady came from the SPCA and got a collar and lease on him, and led him away. She picked him and and carried him too, he must have been starving - he did eat the cat food.
They called later to get more info for their records, and said he's a real sweetie and is doing well. His tag was a rabies tag from New Brunswick, which means he may be very far from home.
If no one claims him, he will be going to a new home in a week.
I'm glad he stuck around so we could get him to safety (dogs generally freak me out.)
