My husband was walking his cat Tophel with the harness outside in the back yard, and he spotted a puppy under the deck. He brought Tophel in and tried to approach him to read the tag on his collar but the puppy ran away fast, down the block and disappeared.

Fast forward a week and I went outside to soak up a bit of sun and was sitting on the bench when I saw something with black and brown fur lying on our grass. (We have a lot of garden beds with tall plants so he was hidden).

Anyway, I got closer and it was the same puppy but he looked really lethargic. I talked softly to him and since it was hot I brought him a bowl of water, but he growled a little when I got closer so I went inside and called the SPCA. He looked like a cross between a pit bull and a rottweiler, but I don't know dogs. He was black with the brown eyebrows and mouth, but had a really squared jaw like a pitt bull. He was also not neutered, so I backed off right away.

While we were waiting for the SPCA, I thought he had left but when I went out, he came out from behind the shed, so I gave him a little cat food that had been okay'ed by the woman at the shelter.

A lady came from the SPCA and got a collar and lease on him, and led him away. She picked him and and carried him too, he must have been starving - he did eat the cat food.

They called later to get more info for their records, and said he's a real sweetie and is doing well. His tag was a rabies tag from New Brunswick, which means he may be very far from home.

If no one claims him, he will be going to a new home in a week.
I'm glad he stuck around so we could get him to safety (dogs generally freak me out.)

Guessing maybe his owners moved from NB and he got lost. Hope he is reunited with his family! If his family is in NB, they should give him a little more than a week to get to him. Either way, I hope he has a happy ending. Poor guy.

The SPCA didn't have a report for a missing puppy fitting his description, they seems surprised since he had been lost for at least a week already. I think that's why they were going to give another week, also probably to neuter him.

I don't know how old he is, he wasn't a tiny rolly-polly guy, but definitely he hadn't grown into his big paws yet.

There's no one looking for him on Craigslist, either, but I will let you know of any updates.

Wow, New Brunswick! I'm glad you were able to get the little guy some help and hopefully he'll find a good home soon.

Should not a rabies tag be traceable to at least a name?  I am supprized no one come looking for him yet? Well, it happens. My Binks was at the shelter for 3 month before I took her home. She is so well behaved I think the had a good life befor i  adopted her. She probebly went out for a good wander one day beacuse she was not spayed.

On the other hand,  My mom lost  one of her kittys. She never gave up. 6 months later her little Baby Boo turned up at the shelter. Seems she was hanging out at the high school and eating bits of lunch the kids were feeding her. One of the kids eventualy brought her in as winter was coming. Good kid!

I wonder if the owners were traveling and the puppy accidently got out of the car during a stop somewhere.  So it's possible they would really like to get the puppy back but just don't know how to find him.

Just my 2 cents

I just called the SPCA and the woman who answered said she was on vacation but will check on it and call me back. She said the puppy is not still there so he's probably been claimed but I'll let you guys know when she calls.
