Definitely food in the trap. If you're going to stay up, you probably don't need the camera as long as you're awake. Do you think he'll come to you outdoors? Could you sit in a garage or car?
IDK if he would come to me.  There is a technique called "simply sitting" which entails sitting in the area you have spotted the cat, quietly, possibly calling his name softly and/or shaking a treat bag every few minutes. And of course, not to lunge for him, but if he comes up, stay still... and wait til you have a 200 pct chance of grabbing him GOOD and hang on ...get him into the house or a carrier.

If I cannot trap him I may have to do this... and even if it's 1:30 in the morning, he will go right to the vet b/c I do not want fleas in the house. And I would be concerned that he is dehydrated ( it's been anywhere from 75 to 86 degrees fahrenheit during the day around here), get him some subQ fluids if needed... checked for ticks, and other parasites.

Oh Addie... So near!

I've never done this so my advice isn't very useful, but what if there was a food trail into the trap? Tiny bits of delicious stuff with a good amount inside? I would be tempted to try that first rather than "simply sitting", but I can't base that on anything but instinct and what jcat said.. along with leaving the camera for the time being.

It's daytime here, so sending loads of
throughout your night...

Actually... I did put a trail... a little dab on a plate on the porch.. a tiny bit more inside the trap and the main course on the other side of the trip plate. He didn't get any food last night so unless he is catching and killing mice, etc... he is going to be VERY hungry. Hoping that works in my favor.

Now I need trapping vibes and prayers... Jaaaaakieeee... go in the trraaaaappp!!!!!!

It's a nice trap, Jake, made just for you. Now go into it like a good kitty.

I have just read this whole thread from start to finish and I'm so happy for you! Was quite scary at the beginning but glad you found him.

Welcome home, Jake.

But here is the body blow - JIC, I had him retested for FeLV and FIV. Supposedly he was tested at the shelter before being adopted out. He tested positive for FIV. The vet says since he wasn't bitten or didn't get into a scrape with another cat, he probably has had the virus all along. :(

He is healthy, lively and playful ... no sign at all of the disease... he gets lysine every day and eats a grain free, healthy diet.

We are devastated. Such a sweet kitty. I know many FIV cats can live long, healthy lives..... Now I gotta go do some in-depth homework on the disease.

I have been following this thread. I am so happy for you. I know how worried and scared you must of been. When I saw your pic you had caught of your cat I knew it was just a matter of time before he would be trapped!

I so glad you got Jake back.  Hopefully a different form of the test will yield different results.  I can not imagine how scary this must be.  Hugs to both of you.

That is very sad, but perhaps this whole episode was a blessing in disguise, as otherwise it could have been years before it was ever discovered. At least now you can deal with it in the best way possible.

Wishing you both the best. x

Hello. I read this thread before bed last night (I'm in australia) I woke this morn and checked early to see if you trapped him and you did! Yay! I'm happy for you both. Sorry to hear about the test results. A vet told me it can take 3 months from the time of contracting it until it shows up positive. I'm sending prayers out for a false neg.

Gosh - such happy, joyful news  :high5: :woohoo: and then....... the FIV diagnosis. Well - it is most likely true that he had it long before he got lost if there is not deep bite wound. I guess it is a good thing, though, that you now know about his condiiton. Now you can take precautions in regards to his overall health. You could talk with (PM) LDG, Laurie. She has much experience with FIV and caring for kitties with the disease. It will be alright :alright: Hang in there!!! :vibes::vibes: :hugs:
