Should I stop feeding him so much?

My mom rescued a cat from the park a month or so ago(actually, she hit him with her car but she took him to the vet and he wasn't hurt...I'm not sure if you'd call that 'rescue', lol). He was so horribly skinny it was awful. I don't know how he was still alive. The vet said it was probably partially lack of food, and partially because he is missing a good deal of teeth (they think he's an older cat) and may have had trouble eating what he could find outside. I think he was 3.5 to 4 pounds or so when she took him in.

He's been eating like a pig ever since, and looks so much better. He's still thin, but filling out. I figured I'd basically give him how ever much he wanted to eat since he needed to gain weight, and I wanted him to see that he had access to food and didn't have to worry about starving. But I'm wondering if it's too much an not good for him. The other day, I gave him a 6 ounce can of food in the morning, a 3 ounce in the afternoon, some treats, a small piece of string cheese, a three ounce can of food in the evening, and he ate probably 1/4 cup of dry food (the fancy feast my mom was giving him mixed with Innova Senior...I'm switching him to that). He ate it all. And made some really horrible litter box deposits to show for it :p

Should I not feed him this much, even though he needs to gain? What would be a reasonable amount of food?

Thank you :)

That is a lot of food, though I'm glad it is all canned! Seems like he should be tapering off by now, you say he has filled out some but is still skinny?

I recommend you have him tested for hyperthyroid disease. Also, he may need to be de-wormed (get dewormer from you vet please, not over the counter stuff)

My cats eat 4.8oz of food a day, but that is of raw food, which you usually feed less than if fed canned....
The amount you are feeding is too much though..... for a regular size cat, let alone a small kitty.
By the way, if you can stick with canned food, all the better, especially if this is an older kitty..... No need fo kibbles.... Canned is definitely the healthier way to go for you little one!
Congrats on your little baby! :heart3:

Usually, when getting a cat to gain weight, you want it to be slow and steady (just like losing weight). So don't feed him a lot, just what you would feed a normal cat. So 2 3-oz cans should be plenty, although most cats prefer to have 3 meals a day so you might want to split the cans up. Or give a small snack of something else (something healthy like meat) for one "meal".
