Hello, I have a 4 month old kitten that has a swollen lower lip. I looked up possible causes and one of them is eosinophilic granuloma. If it turns out that this is what he has what do you do for it outside of going to a vet? Also if left untreated for a period of time what happens? I only ask because I've recently moved and am kind of wiped out fund wise until I start getting payed from my job, so going to a Vet isn't really an option at the moment.

Here's a picture of what it looks like (sorry about the shoddy quality).

I would start by making sure he has no fleas

you could try a tiny bit a benedryl (Be VERY careful. You can easily poison your cat by giving it human meds. Their livers do not filter toxins well at all. Don't give the cat any old pill with the benedryl label.

you must read the label carefully and make sure there aren't a bunch of superfluous ingredients like in the cold formulation.)

Please refer to the forum rules:

No online advice can replace direct veterinary intervention. If you suspect that your cat may be ill, please contact your vet immediately. You are welcome to look for advice in the health forum while waiting for that appointment, but never delay proper veterinary care waiting for Internet advice. Remember that cats, and especially kittens, are very adept in keeping pain to themselves and delaying treatment may cause irreversible damage.

The advice given here cannot take into account your cat’s previous history, and nobody here can give your cat a physical exam to check for any abnormalities. Please feel free to get opinions here, but take your cat to the vet, and discuss any possible solutions with your vet to get their expert, medical opinion first.

I know from your previous posts that you have just taken responsibility for 4 cats in total and one of them is rather jealous. Could she have attacked Icarus?

Is Icarus eating?  Is he lethargic?  Has he vomitted?  Is the swelling in the lower lip only or is it in his mouth, in the glands in his neck?

From the photograph, I'm wondering if it is something like a spider bite. You can give benadryl to a cat, I know my vet has prescribed it for a few of mine, but they worked out the dosage very carefully. If it is a spider bite and you are seeing allergic swelling, then the benadryl will help. I don't know how you are going to work out a safe dosage on your own. Could  you contact your previous vet, if you haven't established a new one, and they might advise?

He has a vet appointment tomorrow. I was hoping to avoid it but I can't risk it. Don't want to futz around with giving the cat people meds as I don't think I'd do well at that.

Good call!  Let us know how it goes.

I know it's hard when you have so many other expenses. I was supposed to be spending some carefully hoarded savings on my home so I could have it appraised for refinance but I must have spent about 1/4 of it on my cats over the past few months.  I keep looking at them now saying "Please don't get sick in the next few weeks. After that we are fine."
