Hi Everyone

Really excited because I just discovered how to make yogurt in the crockpot.

8 cups milk (half gallon) poured in crockpot for 2.5 hours, then let sit for 3 hours.......

Mix in 1 cup sugar, and 1 tsp flavoring (I used cherry and vanilla, 1 tsp of each)

1/2 cup of plain unflavored yogurt to set it going... Pull about a 1 cup of the milk mixture into a bowl to mix with the yogurt base

THEN..... Cover the crockpot with a thick fleece blanket or beach towel for 8 hours..... yummy yogurt should ensue.

We shall see.....I tasted a sample of the cherry vanilla sugary milky mixture and it is delicious so far so good ! :)

Thinking very cheap (about 2 cents a serving) and healthy, I know exactly what is in it.

Can you elaborate more on the crockpot? Is it on or off? What setting?

Do you think this can be made using Splenda instead of sugar?

Okay.

You keep the crockpot on high for the 2.5 hours then unplug and leave it completely off wrapped with a towel or blanket for 8 - 10 hours.

Splenda would work I'm sure, though I'm not sure of the equivelant compared to real sugar.

Splenda and sugar measure exactly the same. I would not use Aspartame sweeteners (such as Equal), though-heat makes them turn bitter.

Something went wrong...

I have drinkable cherry/vanilla milk substance that is way too sweet./

I think I mixed the base in before it was cooled...

That's what I said, I didn't...

I mixed the starter in immediately after turning it off. I didn't remember the "let it set for 3 hours" then mix the base.

Ahhh! So the yogurt bacteria was killed due to the heat.  Are you going to try again?

I'm in the middle of an apartment nightmare, I had to repack all of my stuff because they are going to be spraying my apartment for bedbugs, I don't have any, but the apartment 2 floors down do, and the apartment below me was sprayed, but the girl is still complaining of being itchy, so they are going to respray those apartments again, and include mine seeing that she is below me and if she does have bugs, they will come up here if they don't spray my apartment too! PITA!

But I love yogurt and it pains me to pay the prices in the store.  It looks so easy to make from that recipe, so once I get settled again, I'm going to give it a try too. Only I'm going to use lactaid milk and splenda so that it's diabetic and lactose friendly.

Yea I'm going to try again..........

But not wanting to waste 1/2 gallon milk at the moment, so it will have to wait a week or so....

You think that's what happened?? It just didn't "survive" the heat (the bacteria I mean?)

Yeah, the bacteria is likely temperature sensitive and the recipes state to let the mixture cool for that reason.  It's just like Yeast, if the water is too hot or too cold, the yeast won't grow.
