Me and my husband have a 11 yr old black male short hair cat. For the past few months he has been throwing up daily. some days its undigested food and others its liquid. We have taken him to the vet and all they could tell us is that it was stress induced because we introduced a new kitten into the house. We cant see this being true since this isnt the first new cat or animal in the house since he has been here. We havent noticed a change is his bowels really but i have noticed his coat getting coarser and he is starting to get thinner. We are really starting to worry. He has a history of kidney problems (i.e. Ureter blockages) on more than one occasion so he has been on food for urinary problems ever since and it has kept him from having urine problems since. The only other advice the vet has given us is to change his food which my husband is unwilling to do since he has had so many problems with his kidneys. We are at loss on what else to do. Please if you have any info it would be much appreciated.

Did they do bloodwork? Particularly for thyroid and kidney function? It sounds like hyperthyroid or chronic kidney failure to me. What food is he on now? What do they want to switch him to?

My cat also threw up more when she had crf.

I have read that clumping clay litter sometimes causes vomiting as the dust settles on the fur and when they groom it gets ingested.

If due to the new kitten, try a Feliway diffuser to help calm him.

A trip to the vet is in order if you have not had blood work done recently.

I wouldn't rule out stress. Cats are very particular and will let you know when not happy. My cat has has got along great with some cats and others not at all. Maybe try keeping the new kitten separated from the older cat to see how he reacts and slowly reintroduce.

Does your cat get fish oil? Fish oil is great for hair. I'm unfamiliar with kidney issues other than a friend had a male cat that was blocked and was put on a wet diet and was told by her vet that stress can exacerbate the urinary issue. She had a new roommate at the time and it was believed that caused the stress. Is it ideal to keep on a urinary food long term? Not sure, a vet would know best. I can say my cat was throwing up a lot in the past and not eating much and was put on Prescription Diet I/D (for gastro health) for a few weeks and it helped. I'm not an expert so I would consult with your vet. Best wishes for your kitty!

What diagnostics were done or suggested? Blood work as mentioned above would be at a minimum. If kidney function and thyroid function were normal, the vet should then have suggested imaging of some sort, either ultrasound, endoscopy, and/or tissue biopsy, but certainly x-ray at a minimum.

Is your kitty acting normally? Playing as he used to? Grooming properly?

If blood work was normal, I think the most likely problem is either IBD or lymphoma. When bloodwork is normal yet kitty is obviously ill, these are likely culprits. IBD can be diagnosed via tissue biopsy. Lymphoma...not so easy, unless something turns up on x-ray so they know where to look with ultrasound or where to biopsy, though an ultrasound (or x-ray?) would be able to determine if his lymph nodes are swollen, and one could be biopsied.

Our Lazlo had issues with vomiting. Turns out he had bleeding ulcers (despite no blood in his vomit) and a large mass in his stomach. We were very fortunate, he responded to chemotherapy. (Chemo in cats is different than in humans).

If you have other vet choices, I would consider a new vet.

Vibes for you and your baby. :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Have they checked his blood pressure?  My rainbow kitty, Chynna, was throwing up a great deal. Like your kitty, it was sometimes food and other times clear liquid.  The vet checked her blood pressure and it was very high. She was put on Amlodipine and within a couple days she stopped throwing up.

The only thing the vet did when we took him in was take his temperature which was normal and felt his abdomen which was normal we are gonna try to get a second opinion but first we have to have the money. He is acting normal plays, wants loving, grooms as he normally does he just throwing up. Thank you everyone for all the advice. It gives me more to think about.

P.s. when we first got the kitten we did keep them seperated for quite a while and still do when ever we arent here. this last week was the first time they were left alone together for more than a couple hours

Hmmm...  I would probably have asked for more diagnostics.  Yes, stress is a very real possibility.  Someone else suggested the Feliway Diffuser and I also give it a high recommendation.  I'm kind of concerned that something deeper might be going on though.  It this continues I'd take him in for diagnostic testing and try to find the real answer to what is going on.
