Hi, i just took my 16 year old female cat to the vet for her 6 month checkup. The vet did the exam and said the left kidney is small and the right one is normal. The rest of the exam went fine and she looked in good shape. She had blood work 6 months ago and the results were good. I got blood work yesterday so waiting on the results. It concerns me that 1 kidney has shrunk in size. She has been eating and drinking normally, no different from 6 months ago.

Has anyone had one of their cats kidneys shrink in size? What could cause this? Any info would be great, thanks!

Didn't the Vet offer any ideas as to what it might be?  Best thing to do is wait for the blood test results before you start worrying.  Hopefully it's nothing
, but if it's the beginnings of kidney disease, sounds like you're catching it early
, since her blood tests 6 months ago were good.

Keep us posted.

Missed the call from my vet but on the voice message they said her blood work was all good. No increased levels to be concerned about and that she looked of good health at her checkup so to come back in 6 months for another visit. The vet doesn't seem concerned that 1 kidney is small and made no suggestion for any special changes to make for my 16 year old cat. Thankful her blood results were good but still wondering what would cause a kidney to shrink in size...

Well, good news that the blood test came back normal, but definitely curious as to why the kidney is shrinking.  I would call the Vet back and discuss it further.  They tested the BUN and Creatinine levels, right?

BTW, what do you feed her?  (wet vs dry)
