Earlier today I decided that I need to get a storage shelving unit for my spare room. I dreaded thinking about having to haul something home by taxi, lug it upstairs and then spend hours trying to assemble it!

Tonight I was relaxing and decided to see what was on the Shopping Channel.  I'm glad that I did! I tuned in while they had their home storage solutions on and they were demonstrating a metal folding 4 shelf storage unit! Folding!

As today's show stopper, it is cheaper than the ones I was looking at online at Walmart and Canadian Tire.  Plus it comes fully assembled except for the wheels.  And the best part? It arrives at my door!  lol  The wheels apparently are usually extra.  And I love the idea of wheels because it will be in a room with carpet, so I can move it out and vacuum under it from time to time.

I was thinking that I should get 2, but decided on one to see if that is enough.  If I need another, I can always order one for an additional $30.00 to what I paid for the one today, which is still cheaper (and more convenient) than the ones I've seen in stores.

by Origami? A friend bought two for his garage.. and both crashed. He didn't have much on the shelves either.. some paint cans, car washing tools and such.

what are you planning on putting on the shelves? I work at the Container Store and I am curious, lol

The weight per shelf without wheels is 250 pounds.

The weight per shelf when the wheels are on is 75 pounds.

The average full gallon of paint weights about 10 pounds.

Chances are your friend had the wheels on and overloaded the weight limit.

I plan on storing Xmas ornament storage bin, miscellaneous small appliances that I use, but not on a regular basis, boxes of canning jars etc.  I plan on having the wheels on, so I won't be storing anything really heavy on the shelves.

I've gotten rid of so much clutter and I'm really just looking for a way to maximize storage room vertically, rather than having every flat surface and my spare closet filled with things; making it all look very junky.

I'm pretty sure that everything I have spread around my spare room, can be nicely store on one, or maybe 2 of these origami shelving units.

It just arrived and was pretty easy to put together. The wheels were a bit fiddly because I can't sit on the floor and had to put them on while sitting on a chair.  And it seems pretty sturdy to me. It's made out of steel. It weighs about 29 pounds.

I don't know how he could mess up assembly.  There is nothing to assemble; it comes fully assembled and folded. The only thing you have to decide is whether to put the wheels on it or not. If it wasn't an excess of weight that caused the collapse, maybe he didn't have the 2 locks (the one for the top shelf, and the one at the back of the unit) done up properly?

I can't sit on the ground so it took me about 10 minutes of fiddling to put the wheels on, because I was sitting in a chair and trying to hold the folded unit on it's edge.  But once the wheels were on it took me about 20 seconds to unfold it and to do up the 2 locks.

I've only had it up for about an hour or so, but so far I'm loving it.  Once I sell my portable dishwasher, I want to get a second one (to be used without wheels), so that I can store paper towels, cases of canned items and bags of cat litter, etc  Without wheels I can store 1,000 pounds on the unit.

It looks quite useful but too "industrial" looking for me personally.   IKEA has some lovely storage units.  I just bought 2 pull-out racks specifically for shoes which cost me $10 each.  Each rack holds 8 pairs of shoes.

But anything that helps with storage space is never a bad thing.

The thing is that I live in an apartment, and having to put together a big storage shelving unit, and the possibly move it in the future would be difficult.  This unit folds up and can be easily moved.
