I am posting this in hopes that someone or something can help me with this:

In Apr/May of 2009 I started trapping my colony that I'd been feeding for years. We (my sister & I) were progressively making headway. A few times a cop patroling through would ask what we were doing, we'd explain & he would then commend us for our efforts. This was a business cul-de-sac in North Las Vegas. If we were doing something wrong I would have hoped the first cop would have informed us of this or even the second one.

As I'm sure you all know, it's never easy protecting your colony from the haters, and there are ALWAYS haters. You know the ones...hateful little men (usually) who are so miserable in their selfish pathetic lives that NO ONE OR THING should be better off than him...anyhow there was a man who decided to put out bowls of anti-freeze for our cats, would destroy or hide any bowls we put out for them, etc. Well he succeeded in killing at least one tiny 8 wk. old. Brave right? We thought we'd resolved any issues there may have been because when you ask someone outright what can you do to make this a workable situation - I guess you should automatically know that they are going to lie when they answer you and say everything is fine.

Towards the end of Mar. 2012 my sister and I were both laid off from our jobs in the cul-de-sac where the colony was located (I put in a 12 yr stint with this place) and my car was no longer operable so we were struggling to get there with any regularity due to the fact that my ex-boss, is one of those pathetic, vile, little men I spoke of previously as well as his buddies next door. We got a night time schedule going and tried to keep current head counts.

Well it all comes to this...it took them (those pathetic, vile excuses for human beings) less than 6 mos. to completely massacre the whole colony! A colony at one time that was 25 thriving, beautiful, healthy, living beings but after the previous year was probably closer to 15. I'm not clear on the details yet but my sister found one of the younger ones dying in the street, to weak to keep his head up which we're assuming was due to being poisoned. The guy leaving the message on my phone to inform me of the one death that he knew of wouldn't even tell me what happened except that it was so horrible that "no little thing should have to die like that".

So I am posting anywhere & everywhere to reach out for any suggestions, help, advice ...ANYTHING, to get this kind of crime taken seriously, especially in North Las Vegas. I want to get justice for my cats & make this creep or creeps a little nervous at the very least. I have no clue how to start or where to start but these cats cannot die in vain. Anything will be appreciated.

I especially need info for storing a body & getting a toxicology or necropsy done.

OH my heart is breaking for those cats. The world is just full of sick, cruel and heartless people. :eek:nfire: I am so sorry that this is happening to those innocent little cats. :bawling: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: I don't know the laws in NV but that is illegal in many states to poison cats. Can you notify the police? Since they were supportive of your efforts at one time. That is where I would start. I am sorry about the job loss and the car troubles. Makes caring for them so much harder. I hate to think of cats suffering horrible deaths that way - poisoning. My heart goes out to you and your sister for your loving efforts to save these cats. Bless you both. :hugs: :heart3: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

p.s. I don't know how to keep a body until the necropsy can be done. Call a vet  they will know... Please keep us posted on your findings.

I filed a report with police (who transported one of the dying cats to the shelter where he arrived DOA) It is supposed to be a felony in Nevada & I have suspicions but no proof. None of the local orgs seem to be angered by this at all.

This is illegal and if you know who is doing this go the extra mile to find the evidence.  The man can be fined and imprisoned for animal cruelty, he can be sentenced for every animal he has made sick.  This is dangerous not only for the little hearts you look after but for anyone's PETS as well.

Freezing the body is the best way to preserve it.  Wrap it in freezer safe bag then bundle it in towels, keep it tightly bound.  This is how we preserved our kitten when we had to do the same thing.  Our neighbor poisoned our kitten's bowl with d-con and he was fined heavily for it.  I was too young to remember if he spent time in jail or not - but a lot of people have.  I remember a story about a dog owner's next door neighbor soaking a bag of petfood in antifreeze and throwing it over the fence so the german shepard would eat it. The dog survived but suffered severely, but justice was served and I believe that man also went to jail.

I suggest setting up security camera's on the property and setting the bowls of food and water where they can be surveillanced and recorded.  Get a good look at who's been doing this to you and your little ones.  If you work hard at this - it will pay off and justice will be served.

I don't know, I've started frantically searching for you to help find some sort of ground point here.  I suppose you can read this - it seems to have a lot of information.
Excellent!! I had a feeling it was illegal in NV. And thank you for posting that link. I am sorry about your kitten when you were younger. :hugs:

:vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: that the person will be caught and put away The surveillance cameras are a good idea, if possible.

Sometimes bad things happen to good souls to prepare us for something worse that may be in our future pathway.  In this case, I probably would not have been able to offer any sort of advice for you in this situation had it not happened.  I really hope you can find the jerkface that's been doing this and I definitely hope he's brought to his knees with fines so great it makes the rest of his life miserable.

You could contact Best Friends:

http://www.bestfriends.org/index.htm

Cruise through their web site and there will be at least one link to contact people at the sanctuary who are helping communities set up and run TNR programs. They have quite a few contacts in Las Vegas, holding adoption events there with local rescues, taking pets there to specialist vets, etc.

Only in the youngest of kittens is antifreeze poisoning a quick death. it will in adult cats shut down the kidneys over time and the kitty dies from the toxins building up in the system.  I would contact these folks and ask them for help with the legalities of what happened

http://www.hcws.org/

I would also contact these folks  http://law.lclark.edu/centers/animal_law_studies/resources/legal_resources/    and ask them what you can do-

I am so sorry those cats suffered from ignorant and cruel hands but suspect you won't let this go until their deaths are not in vain!

Good luck!

These types of cases can be and are sometimes prosecuted. In Washington DC, a biologist was found guilty of ATTEMPTED cruelty by being caught just putting the poison in the cat food dishes. Thankfully, apparently only one cat was harmed, not the colony. But the Washington Humane Society got involved, did the investigative work, obtained video from the apartment building where it happened, etc.

Unfortunately, without catching the perpetrator on "film," so to speak, I don't know that there is anything that can be done. Determining the cause of death, and identifying the poison used are not enough. The person has to be caught putting the poison in the food, either with eyewitnesses or via video footage.

If there is any way to do this, if you continue to put out food even if there are no cats left in the colony, then perhaps there is a chance of prosecution. NV just recently toughened up its animal cruelty laws, in fact.

Sorry to know that all your work ended up in pain & suffering for already down on their luck animals.  What goes around, comes around, the really awful Karma created by the useless garbage humans who did will come back to haunt them.  In most States it's a crime to poison animals & especially when there's a group trying to find shelter for them.  I believe you can go to the police with this criminal matter (scum who do this most often abuse children & the elderly with the same lack of compassion).  It's important to have a record, I wish someone would have had them on tape doing this.  It will be hard to prove unless someone who knows the people who did this comes forward and admits that they know for a fact that these people are the ones who did this.  I would photographed these people & post their pics. and let everybody know what they did & what kind of trash they are, eventually they will commit other crimes, maybe even against humans!

I wish you could have found a safe, quiet place where they could live, you could feed & help out & everyone could be protected including yourself.  It's tough without money, and hard to keep up when you need money for yourself.  You did the best you could, find some peace in that.  SDM

Hi i just wanted to tell you my heart goes out you, I too was feeding a colony of at least 25 cats that I would go and feed every night, it was a section 8 housing apartment that I would see them coming from & there was a big bus stop area off to the side/corner where they used to wait for me. Anyway that housing has a guardshack close to the bus stop where I fed them & one of the guards told me numerous times to stop feeding them cause they have all kinds of diseases blah blah blah but that wasn't going to stop me from feeding. I hate those kinds of people who have nothing better to do than complain about you feeding the cats. If they don't like cats thats fine they're not bothering him so why is he causing a problem for them. Well I continued to feed the cats but i was planning to trap as many of them as I could & relocate them to my neighborhood where its more safe & theres no jerks like that but all of a sudden one night i went to feed the cats & there were no cats there, went night after night back to feed them thinking maybe they weren't hungry since there was one lady in the housing that fed them but every night i would go no cats were there waiting for me. I know that the guard had called animal control & I was so angry I wanted to kill him. I had only caught two cats who now live in peace in my neighborhood. I wish i could have saved all of them. I AGREE with you totally that there needs to be more protection for cats, more compassion for them because they are so pure & their love is unconditonal and for people to hate on them on them/harm them is not right. I wish you luck in getting justice for your cats & i will pray that those idiots meet the same fate 10x worse. GOD BLESS YOU

Wow, I am so sorry for you and your sister. This story breaks my heart. I do not understand how people can be so cruel. There has to be something done to protect these animals that are being cared for. We happily volunteer our time, love, and money for these cats that many times are just thrown away by careless owners, or at least from my experience, this is how the colony originally starts. All we want in return is some protection for these animals we have put so much into. I am thankful for people like you and what you did for those cats. You showed those cats love, and that is what they need most in a world that can be so heartless toward them. I hope you are able to get some sort of justice for your cats. I will pray for you.

I have reason to believe the manager of a fitness gym in Arlington is doing this, too.  A rescuer there told me there had been 16 kittens in the area, but she could only find four alive last weekend, and she saw at least one dead in the dumpster.  Apparently he had threatened to do some such thing.

It's illegal in Texas, that's for sure.
