About 3 hours ago, I was in my backyard, gardening, when I heard a LOT of sirens: fire, police, ambulance. Then, I heard an explosion--it sounded just like a Civil War cannon being fired (I'm a former CW reenactor, so the sound is familiar). It wasn't fireworks--just the one BOOM. Then more sirens. About 1/2 hour later, I saw a helicopter circling around our houses--about 4 times. I don't think it was a news helicopter.

DH just came home from work. He said the development straight across the main road which goes by ours was blocked off, with SWAT teams, police, etc. there. He thought maybe someone had a meth lab in their house, and there was an explosion (?). He doesn't think a transformer blew (and why would a SWAT team be called in for that?)/

Any ideas? There are no businesses, factories, chemical plants near here.

You never can tell anymore where they'll set up meth labs.We had a bust in my county a few days ago and it was a house just a couple of doors down from one of my fellow associates. They claim they never knew a thing!

That could be due to the residents keeping the curtains drawn or painting the windows so no one couls see inside!

Has anyone ever heard a meth lab house explode? What does it sound like--just one BOOM, or several?

I saw a headline on the local paper's website: there was a suspicious fire in a house; unknown, suspicious substance in the house/on the floor; HAZMAT teams called in; we've been told to stay indoors.

That really sounds like a meth lab if they called in a hazmat team. The house will probably be condemned even if it was just a small explosion. It's scary to think of something like that it your own neighborhood.

Yep, I really think it was a meth lab. I think the helicopters were news ones: the local news had aerial footage, which showed the garage door blown off, and fire damage to that part of the house.  It looked just pics I've seen of places where meth was cooked in the garage. They're lucky they were right next to a fire station. What idiots: it's bad enough they're ruining their own lives with this nonsense, but what if they had kids or pets? And how about the poor neighbors?

Definitely sounds like a meth lab.  That stuff is very toxic.  So make sure you keep your windows closed!!

It isn't just the immediate neighbours. The fumes from cooking meth get into the air and is carried with the wind.  I would contact your local poison control and see if there is a risk in your area from that.
