YWhat fish oil supplements do you use in your cats your cat's food? Also, how much do you use and how long did it take to see an improvement? I adopted my DMH calico in January. She had hair loss, which has mostly improved, but she still has dandruff. She is on all wet food. I'm hoping a supplement will help, because nothing else seems too. Thanks. :)

As being a new cat owner, I am looking for nutritious cat food. I haven't tried the fish oil on cats though. I will check out the link.

Thanks

I highly recommend Pure Alaska Omega salmon oil, if you want something less expensive than the krill oil. It's sold on Amazon or at Costco. It's not cheap compared to many fish oils, but it's high quality - and that makes a difference when it comes to supplementing with an omega 3.

Here is the description: http://www.alaskaproteinrecovery.com/salmonoil

One of my cats had some dandruff, even after switching to an all raw diet and supplementing with salmon oil. I discussed it with the vet. She asked me - is he a good groomer? I had to think - but compared to the other cats, he is NOT. So she recommended I use the furminator on him daily, which I do now. And the improvement in his coat was noticeable within a few days. :lol3:

You may also want to consider using some Evening Primrose Oil. It contains GLA. This is an omega 6, but an anti-inflammatory one that acts like an omega 3, and has shown benefit to skin and coats. Here's an abstract to a study, indicating both worked best for dermatitis: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8280288

And a discussion of fatty acids re: conditions: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+1400&aid=665

The dose of Evening Primrose Oil is 500mg daily, though it's always a good idea to start small, and slowly increase as needed.

If a supplement is needed this is the way to go.  I've also noticed it at Petsmart in the dog aisle and noticed it in the cat aisle as well.  It is real pricey.  There is also a line of GNC products out but I have not checked out the prices etc.  I've never needed to use supplements but from everything I've read and been taught the Pure Alaska Omega salmon oil is the route I would take.
