I have a cat that was bitten by another cat in his hind leg. It was swelled the first day, swelling gone the second day. Took to Vet on 4th or 5th day due to Vet not being open on weekends. He kept him overnight because he put him under to examine the leg. Told me to pick him up next morning around 9am. Vet called at 7am to tell me that he was going out of town this morning & would like me to meet him at his office around 2pm instead. He said he wanted to discuss what he did. He did tell me that the bite went all the way to the bone. I agreed and did not ask if anything serious had happened. Now I am scared out of my wits that my cat has died & he doesn't want to tell me over the phone. How likely is this?

I'm brand new here at The Cat Site, so I'm not sure if I've done this posting my question right. I am sooooo very frightened & regretting that I didn't ask more questions. Any reassurance or thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Oh no, honey I really doubt that happened!!!!! :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::hugs::hugs:

It could have been an abcess, and he drained it...that's all I could really think. Or possibly an infection near the bone, which is more serious. I really hope everything is okay. Many hugs for you!!!!!! :hugs::hugs:

Thank you. I will let you know after I go in to pick up my little man. His name is Brother. I am going to be a nervous wreck until then. Thank you again for your kindness & hopeful words.

Good Morning KittyLover23, just wanted to let you know that Brother is home & is going to be okay, we hope. As it turns out, his bite wound is very severe. It is at his knee, which the vet said was a particularly bad place. He has a deep infection. He came home with his leg bandaged but the Vet wants me to try to leave it unwrapped as much as I can. As many times a day as Brother will let me I have to soak the wound with a sponge dipped in ebson salted warm water for at least 5 min. better if it's 10 min., then spray the wound with peroxide, then fill the giant hole that is in his leg with a topical antibiotic cream. The vet gave him a antibiotic shot that will last for 7 days, in which time I'll take Brother back to see him for another shot & exam of his wound. This means no hellish pilling or fighting with trying to get a liquid shot into his throat! Oh boy, have we got some fun ahead of us!!! I'm very thankful that I've been saved from trying to give him antibiotics. I've never had to care to this extreme for one of my cats before and know that it's going to be difficult but it has to be done, so I will give it my all! Thanks so much for your kind support! If you'd like I'll share the fun with you, it should be interesting, if not down right entertaining!!!

Next time you know another cat has bitten your cat, you know to take him to the vets as soon as they are open!

My cat bit me last year (the vet touched his bad tooth he was too frail to have removed) and the next day my hand had a big red swelling.  GP said they always treat cat bites, but only sometimes treat dog bits.  The cat bit me just about 5pm when the minor injuries in the local hospital had just closed.

Oriental Slave, thanks for sharing. Thankfully I've not ever been bitten by a cat, mine or any other. And yes, I will take any of my cats to the vet alot sooner for a cat bite, but hopefully we won't have this problem again.
