I'm not sure which commcerial foods contain probiotics. But it doesn't really matter--the processing, transport, storage, etc. of the food usually kills most of the beneficial bacteria anyway. It's best to buy a good human-quality probiotic and add it fresh to your cat's food with each meal.

I've had the best experience with Science Diet, but I don't think that it has probiotics in it. In fact I'm pretty sure that most cat foods don't have probiotics in them because processing etc. I would talk to your vet if you think your cat needs probiotics and maybe he/she can prescribe a supplement of some sort.

:yeah: It's best to buy the probiotic separately, and just sprinkle it on the food before giving it to kitty to eat. It's best to use a human acidophilus+bifidus type supplement; most of the cat probiotics have "fermentation products" in them, which are not active (live) cultures. For a cat under one year, you only need a supplement with 5 billion active cultures; for a cat over 1 year, you want 10 billion active cultures, and the supplement typically only needs to be given once or twice a day. When we had a kitty with diarrhea problems, he got it twice a day. The other cats get it just once a day.

This is the supplement I give to my cats once a day (and that my husband and I also take!):

i've seen it listed in grain-free kibble, evo, nature's variety, blue wilderness, etc. here is what Blue claims:

Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bacillus Subtilis, Bifidobacterium Thermophilum, Bifidobacterium Longum and Enterococcus Faecium are active dehydrated cultures added to BLUE dog and cat foods after processing. They are activated on ingesting the food and help to maintain normal bacteria balance in the lower intestine. They aid in digestion and reduce the occurrence of diarrhea, contributing to colon and rectum health.

Only if you buy it from iherb. Natural Factors doesn't recommend shipping it refrigerated: there's no need to have it shipped on ice. :dk: Order it from Amazon or a different supplier, or buy it from a health food store. It may be in the refrigerated section, but here is the discussion at the website of the manufacturer: http://naturalfactors.com/ca/en/products/detail/2879/acidophilus-and-bifidus

L. rhamnosus is probably the most important probiotic strain for health from the mouth to the small intestine. It protects by coating the mucus, preventing toxins from reaching the blood. It even results in better smelling breath. L. rhamnosus survives temperature extremes and is resistant to bile salts and stomach acid, ferments 23 sugars and inhibits negative bacteria and yeast growth. It is hardier and keeps better without refrigeration....

Each capsule contains:
5 billion active cells of the following specially cultured strains of probiotics:
Lactobacillus rhamnosus (HA-111)............................ 80% 8.00 billioncfu
Lactobacillus acidophilus ( HA-122)............................ 10% 1.0 billioncfu
Bifidobacterium bifidum (HA-132)................................ 10% 1.0 billion cfu

Yes, your understanding is correct. :) We switched to a human probiotic for our pets on the advice of one of our vets (our holistic DVM).

There are probiotics made for pets. Many on the site use Provaible-DC, but it's made mostly of "fermentation" products (or entirely?), and those are not live cultures.

My cats love yoghurt :lol3: but they'd have to eat far too much of it to get enough live cultures to properly populate the gut. :)

The probiotic supplement suggested is in capsule form. What quantity should I give a 9 pound cat? Or should I mix the complete contents of the capsule in her food?  She is a finickey eater and will probably detect the difference.

You can give cats and dogs yogurt contains live enzymes. Some cats are lactose intolerant and although the live bacteria kills the lactose it is better to give a cat Goat Milk Yogurt. Be sure it is plain, no sugar added, organic Goat Milk Yogurt with live bacteria enzymes.

Out of those 4 I know from my brain that evo and nature's variety are worthy of purchase.
