Last week on Sunday we started having to use 10 digit dialing for local numbers, and it's driving me crazy!

Our area code is 204, but now with all of the cell phone numbers being given out, they are running out of numbers, so they are introducing a new area code 431 to our Province, starting in October or November this year.

However, now they want everyone to dial the area code before the phone number.  Until November if you forget, you get an automatic message reminding you that you need 204 in front and then your call goes through.  Come November the call won't go through.

After 45 years of dialing 7 digits, it's hard to remember to add 3 more!!!

IMHO they should have made it only those with the new area code need to dial 10 digits and then left the rest of us alone!  LOL

LOL! I remember when they did this in Ottawa years ago - it took my wizzened mind literally months to remember the area code.

They are doing that to us as well...........giant PITA. I always forget but so far no recorded messages. It's going to be worse here, they are doing overlay instead of splitting the province or splitting off cell phones. Overlay means that anyone new in our puny little town after they bring in the new area code will have that. RIDICULOUS

They did that here years ago. It was a pain at first, but now I don't even think about it. Our area code is 519, but my home phone (we have a magic jack) has the stupid new 226 area code. We had a 519 number, but we changed the number when we renewed it since we had moved during the year. I can't seem to remember my home phone number now.

That's the same here.  There are no "zones".  Come November if I get another phone number, I will get a 431 area code to go with it.

They did that here in the U.S., I think, in the late 1980's (?).  And they changed our area code, too. It used to be 215; now, it's 610 (215 is now for Philadelphia, PA).  It's a pain, but you get used to it.

This is true.  We ran out around that time also.  But if you are calling a number that is within the area code that you are in you don't need the area code.   When they first made the change I lived in a state that has 5 and it was confusing at first.  Now I am in a small state that still has one area code but 99% of my calls are to other states.

These days I am so used to giving my number with the area code it's not a big deal.

Still I sometimes mess it up.  One time I was back home and wanted to call a person who lived right up the street.  Not thinking I just dialed the 7 digits.  I was really confused when I got a wrong number.  Twice!  It wasn't until later that I realized that I was on my cell that has an out of state area code.  Duh I felt kind of bad because I think I woke the person up.

They do that here where I live, but not where my dad lives.  I always forget when I go to visit and call family members!  I get that annoying sound followed by the message that my number cannot be completed as dialed.  UGH!

It seems we've been spoiled where I live with only having a single area code and not having to dial 10 digits for local calls.

I'm doing pretty well. I still forget, but I hang up and redial with the 10 digits. Only a few times have I completely forgotten and got the message about having to dial the area code.

Same here.....we've been doing this for years now. Even in the same area code. It was frustrating until we got used to it.

We have 11 digit dialing here, our mobiles are 11 digits all of the time. If I was phoning my mam I could not use the area code so its just 7 digits but because I always use my mobile I have to use the area code making that 11 to lol
