A friend was given a kitten, but is not sure on how old the kitten might be as he wasn't told when it was born.

The kitten is black and still has dark blue eyes. When it walks its slow paced and wobbly, the kitten does not yet react to catnip at all and doesn't play but follows finger movements. He is feeding mushed canned food the kitten won't eat dry kibble. We fear it was given away too soon but are not sure of the age I'm not sure how to tell how old it is?

4-5 weeks? Not more.  Yes, he was given away too early. So you (and your friend) must do your outmost to act loving mum and dad for him. Quite some extra pressure on the owners, but it will repay heavily later on.

We want to see picts, and more reports!

Good luck!

I was reading further and it looks more like 4 weeks as the tail is erect and the body is disproportionate. What is usually the age kittens are supposed to be given away?

I know a lot about cats but this area I wasn't familiar with, luckily I know people who work in cat rescue so whatever help and information my friend needs I know the kitten will be helped and well cared for. :)

We on this TCS-site and Forums, and all serious breeders recommend 12 weeks (or even more), with 10 being OK.  Some Indenpendent Cat clubs accepts 10 w.

8 could be OK if you cant wait longer like may be the case with private people who "got" a litter of kittens. Not good but may pass.

Everything under is too young.

There are a couple of exceptions:  Emergency cases of course, where you just must do what must to be done to save the precious life.

And kittens of ferale moms, where there is a fosterer or a really good adoption home waiting.  Because the easiest way to foster ferale kittens is when they are young...

Since the baby is really young, and it sounds like it would not even be weaned from mom yet, I would get some kitten milk replacer and offer it to him in a bottle or saucer. You say it is eating wet food, maybe mix the wet with some KMR. Make sure you are feeding it several times a day it is in a very rapid growing age and needs all the nutrition it can get.

I just keep food available for her all the time. I'd also keep a saucer of water to drink available as well. Dip her chin in barely to show her what it is.
