For most of the time that I've lived on my own I've had apartment insurance.  I had to let it lapse between 2004 and 2008 while I was on disability from my job because I just couldn't afford it. But as soon as I got my first cheque I went and bought it.

Last year I let it lapse again.  I was off work for 5 months with a deep depression and it was all I could do to get out of bed. So again, I let the policy lapse.

This building has a lot of fire alarms!  Since I've lived here (16 plus years), all but 3 were false alarms.  However, my heart pounds and I stress out whenever I hear the alarm because it would cost a small fortune to replace everything I own.

Today I was at the mall and walked by an insurance store and popped in to change the address on my driver's license and while there bought home insurance!

I was quite impressed with the agent.  She asked all kinds of questions in order to get me all of the discounts she could get me.  She did pretty good in my opinion, but she's convinced that she can get me even more discounts. She gave me a list of questions about sump pumps and back water valves and such for me to ask my rental agency about. And she is checking into further reduction due to the increased security that is now in my apartment building.

I feel so much relief now that I have insurance again.  This company allows me to pay through online banking, so it will be easier for me to pay it again when it comes due. I don't like to write cheques because I'm not for keeping track of my day-to-day banking and  I tend to forget about cheques. When I look at my bank balance I like knowing that what I'm seeing is the actual balance. So next year when I renew my deductable drops to $500.00 (currently $1,000 because I let my policy lapse), and I'll get an additional 15% discount.
