So I have used all matter of kittening boxes over the past few years and today found something that I am in love with. I was at Bed, Bath, and Beyond (for an unrelated errand) when I saw these "compact dryer racks." I have no interest in the dryer rack, but the box that they come in- OH MAN! (To be clear, the box that they are shipped to the store in, not the box they are packaged in to buy). The back is higher than the front, making it perfect to drape a towel over giving Momma privacy while letting me see in without it sagging. Also it is long enough for Momma to stretch out wide enough to fit kittens with plenty of room. Needless to say I was obsessed with my find and took all the dryer racks out of the box (and redisplayed them nicely) and asked if I could have it. Of course they said yes and even though I kindly offered to pay told me just to take it. I got it home and cut out a square in the front so she could get in and out easier, then draped the whole box with a sheet. I lined the inside with several layers of towels and draped an old beach towel over the top. There you go- a FREE kittening box!
After I set it up and admired my work I put Ara in to see how she liked it. That was 4 hours ago. She spent about 2 hours rooting around scrunching up the towels jjjjuuuussssssttttttt right and now is happily relaxing and kneading away. So proud of myself. If you have a BBB in your city (I don't know if they are international) I would drop by and hijack one or more of these boxes for current or future use. It saves them from having to break them down, and makes you a friend to the environment for re-purposing cardboard. Everybody wins!
In case you can't visualize here is a pic of my masterpiece. The "door" looks a lot lower than it is because she pushed up two layers of towels to make her little hole she's laying in. Yes, I know nothing matches- that's just how I roll. I am also aware that the fact that I saw a cardboard box and immediately thought, "this would be great for having kittens in!" makes me a little crazy. Perhaps I need a new hobby....
Hope this helps someone unsure of how to provide a cozy place for your Queen!
