Shelter cats often have URI's, do get him into the vet soon as you can as he'll need antibiotics.

My kitten had a URI a couple of weeks back. Take him to the vet 1st thing in the morning. He should be fine if you do so.

Vet tomorror should be OK.  It is a asap veterinary errand, but not necessary emergency errand.

Some forumites uses L-lysine for  many such situations. Doesnt hurt as it is natural, but can help.

It helps also some against virus-infections.

You can surely find it in "Health food" shops.   I dont know the dosage for cats, sorry. Seek for it here on our forums.

But do this L-lysine parallell with the vet visit, NOT instead off.

Welcome to our Forums!

Good luck!

Thanks guys. Turns out it was just an STD type disease in the eye that Dexter had recieved from his mother. The vet just gave us an antibiotic to give to him everyday.

My guess is feline herpes, which my cat also has. I got her from a shelter as a kitten and she had the same symptoms (similar to a URI but especially concentrated in one eye- lots of watering and gooping).

In my experience it doesn't flare up often but whenever she gets really stressed or her immune system is weak will come back. My girl's last flare up was after her yearly vaccination and rabies booster. That may or may not happen in your case but if it does you can ask your vet for meds to keep on hand so you don't have to keep going back. Mine gives me the ointment at our yearly exam so I just have it should she have a flare up. I also give her L-Lysine when I know something stressful is going to happen to give her a boost. You can buy it from the vet or off the internet. It has dosing directions on the package, and the dose depends on what kind you buy (the gel, the powder, or the capsules). I'm partial to the powder because it's easy to mix into wet food and lasts a lot longer than the gel does.

Feline Herpes is not a big deal and most of the time you won't notice it minus the occasional flare-up.

And good luck administering the antibiotic. It's not so hard when he's little but just wait until he's full grown!
