How much will this stray's vet care cost in NY?

So, basically money is the one thing standing in my way for doing SOMETHING for this stray. I asked my mom and she said if she had enough money, she would keep Tango.
He isn't in perfect condition, far from it in fact.
His eye I'm betting is useless now, when I first saw him, it was red and swollen, you couldn't see his eye color, only red tissue, then it became milky and full of discharge, and back to red again.
He is a bit gimpy, sorta hard for him to go up and down our porch and to lay down.
He's a dirty mess.
I bet money he has parasites.
My mom assumes it will cost about 2000$ .. So I am looking for a low cost veterinary service offering treatment for strays, and euthanization too, since my mom assumes he has a cancer of some sort ( she is a nurse. ) but I'm still hopeful since he eats and drink juuuust fine, in fact he's getting a bit more aggressive when he wants food, like meowing ( a very manly meow, mind you ) repeatedly.
He isn't aggressive, and he hangs out at our backyard most of the time.
There is also the fact that we have 1 dog, a Maltese, and 2 cats ( kittens actually ). My Maltese barks and digs at him, but he doesn't, react very scared, just glances at her, and sometimes walks away. She sometimes watches very quietly when he eats. And almost one third of the day she sits at the backyard door waiting for Buster, I just heard her bark at him now, and scratching.. Wait.. She does the same thing with the kittens, but eventually sorta warmed up to them.
I am not too worried about the kittens, since they didn't really pay him any mind, though when they saw him he was always sleeping.. And with proper introduction, I will cross my fingers.
He looks like a very old cat, so I don't want to take him to the city in a bumpy trunk in a cage. I live in Staten Island, NY. I also refuse to take him to the shelter, since it is certain they will kill him without a second thought.
I know I might sound very very selfish, but I always feel like **** when I feel happy, then remember Tango, I have never wanted anything so much in my life, and would like to help him by the end of summer. He is still eating, he isn't giving up.

Also, he has a collar, with tags, but as far as I saw the number is disconnected. I think it also might have said he was from Florida.

You probably should Google Low Cost Vet Clinics in your area. There should be many hits in the NY area. He sounds like he needs medical attention asap. You may want to also look up cat sanctuaries, and see if there is a place you can take him where he can get fixed up and live out the rest of his days.

Plus, my mom thinks he isn't litter trained ( or forgot how ) or has a bladder problem, can he be litter trained or can his supposed 'incontinence ' be helped? He doesn't seem to pee uncontrolablly, but sometimes he peed in the shelters I've made :( or at least I think it was him.. And to reply.. I have done that.. But it is sort of hard to make my mom call up the vet to ask.. I mean she loves Buster a lot, but whenever I bring him up she gets REALLY snippy with me. I don't think she's hopeful for him..and she doesn't have enough money, and I can't seem to find low cost vets at all, the most important thing is the low cost, then she'll listen a little ..

Since you live in the Staten Island area I would have your mom call
P.L.U.T.O. at the link below. They are a "no kill" shelter. This means they put pets in foster homes until they find someone to adopt them. Tell them he's a friendly stray and in bad shape. If you turn him over to them, he will see a veterinary immediately who will determine what's wrong with him and treat him.

I will say however, if he's suffering and not going to live they will make the decision to relieve his suffering. Hopefully they have room for him, and you can convince your mom to call. If they don't have room, have her to ask who does. They should know.

I don't think P.L.U.T.O has a physical location though, they host adoption events in Petco and all that.. so where will this vet be exactly..? I hope I don't sound rude, sorry :(.

P.L.U.T.O. is a rescue, and they probably don't have a physical location. They use foster homes. If they were able to take them it wouldn't matter to you where the vet is. . .they'd take care of it. I agree that yyou should try to convince your mom to call them.

Is he fixed? He could be marking/spraying the sleeping box.

Start with a general exam visit and if nothing major noted get an FIV/FELV test and go from there.

Sure it is different prices but for me it is

Office visit-60

FIV/FELV 40-60 depending if it tests for heartworm also

Course of antibiotics would be under 30

Xrays under 150 if needed.  Though I would wait to see if everything else clears before doing any.

If he is that old it could be arthritis.  Can you just call?  Unless you are making appointment and authorizing charges to a credit card/debit card no one really cares the age for the most part.  Get a bunch of places and call during the week.

Really if you can't afford treatment turning him over may be in his best interest.  Yes there is a good chance he will be put down but it elimanates pain and is a fast way to go.
