Hi everyone, so all 6 kittens are growing well, they are 8 days old now and I have some questions, I have been looking at older threads but figured I would ask them anyway. So their eyes are starting to open and all their umbilical cords fell off. They all are gaining weight fast and growing very fast. They crawl around pretty well to. So I read they start food at about 3 weeks old, just making sure this is correct. Can I just put out moms food and see if they are interested in it? She is eating 3 cans of wet food a day, what a pig and dry food is always available.
Next question is that I have to take them at 4 weeks old to get dewormed should I bring mom as well and if I don't being her will she be upset I took her babies?
Mom hates dogs but I want the babies to like dogs so when can I start to introduce them to my dog?
When should I put non clumping litter in her litter pan? Which is the best litter for kittens that won't smell too bad?
When can I clip their nails? Right now they are super sharp but I wasn't sure if I should clip them yet?
Thank you

Put mum's food in shallow dishes - more than one - and they will discover it for themselves.  It can be a messy business!

Take mum and all the kittens for worming.  How long ago was mum done?  She might be due as well.

As soon as they are crawling they might explore the litter pan.  Make sure you have a nice low one, and possibly more than one.  If you keep on top of the scooping it shouldn't smell, but kittens can be hit and miss to start with - they realise they need to go with very little time to go - so don't give them too much room for those crucial few weeks.

I've never trimmed kitten claws (or cat claws, except for shows), I wrap myself up in fleece!  But they do need scratching posts / areas.  Some cats like  vertical, some horizontal, and the posts can make great climbing frames.  Don't encourage them to claw or bit you, redirect when they have a go at you.

Mum will be eating a huge amount over the next few weeks, she needs to be let eat as much as she wants.  The large input does lead to a rather large output, and I'm not refering to her milk...

Three weeks is a litle young to be eating solid food, but you can try mashing up som kitten food (and yes, mom should be eating some extra nutritional grub) with water to a soup consistency, and smearing some on their gums or paws to see if they like it. I suspect they will not want it yet, but around 4 weeks they will decide they like the idea.

My kittens all start eating around 3 weeks, I've never watered down food for them they just start eating mums wet or raw when they are ready.  There's no need to force them to start eating, they'll do it on their own if mum is fed in front of them.

I don't start clipping claws until around 5 weeks and I use human baby clippers as they are nice and small

Do you need to take them in to get wormed? Depending where you live de-wormers are available over the counter without a prescription, or a call to your vet to get the pills without taking everyone in.

I use the same litter as mum uses (non-clumping wood pellets) and again they learn by watching her use the tray. I put down smaller shallow trays for them, usually foil lasagne dishes once they are eating they start to use the litter on their own. Helps if they are in a kitten pen.

I read kittens start eating solids at 5 weeks and when they do, it must be canned, not dry. If that is true and the mom is not feeding them enough herself, I would give the kittens KMR to make up for it.
