We had noticed a feral cat roaming our neighborhood for close to 2 years and did not start feeding her until early 2011 as we felt sorry for it. I had thought it was a male as I had never seen it pregnant before. In June 2011 I noticed it had a swollen tummy eating by our back door. We had our home on the market to be sold and this poor cat is used to us feeding her so I was able to find a feral cat rescue organization and borrowed a trap and was able to get her after 3 tries. I had given our vet a heads up that I wanted to bring her in to abort her babies (she was ready to drop at any time) and have her fixed and checked out. All she had was hook worms and we got rid of them with medication she survived the surgery just fine. She was really freaked out when we trapped her as it was obvious she had not had any human contact before. We have 4 other indoor cats and we kept the feral who we call Sox now, in a half bath for 5 months and we spent a lot of time with her, trying to get her used to us. She took right to the litter box.

We sold our home in Fl. in Dec. 2011 and we traveled to NV. with all 5, and Sox and all the guys/gals rode so well and gave us no problems at all. We stopped 6 nights so they could do their thing and get fed and watered. We kept Sox in the motel bathroom each night and she always got in her carrier we had in their with her so there was no problem getting her ready to roll each morning.

We have had her for over a year now and she has the run of the house but feels more secure in our master bedroom as that is where her base is and heads for that room if we encounter her in another part of the house. In the day time she lays in front of the sliding glass window in her own bed and in the evening she gets on our bed in her bed until we go to bed and she goes in the adjoining closet next to the master bath room for the night but does roam at night. She is very content and has her tail up most of the time and does not mind us getting close but she does not want us to touch her. She lays in her bed in ways she could not being in the wild as she would not feel safe.  We did a good thing for her and we feel good we rescued her from the outdoors. A neighbor told me she had at least 2 litters while she was a feral before we got her. She meows at us when I bring wet food to her in the evening.   She is a real sweet girl and is not agressive. Never heard her growl or hiss so far. Two of our other cats kind of annoy her sometimes so I just get the squirt bottle out and that takes care of that.

Hi Lauren,

I see you have a house full of furry dumplins also. They are so cute and so sweet. Thank you for the comment about Sox. We feel so good we rescued her as she is a very sweet cat and we see some of her personality coming out. We had never done anything like that with a feral cat before but since we were in the process of selling our home in Fl. we felt bad for her since we had started to feed her and then saw her pregnant.  The first couple of weeks after we had her fixed she was crying in the half bath we had her in and thought about letting her back outside as we did not want her to be miserable. But we got to thinking that we couldn't leave her behind expecting us to be there to feed her. Anyway she finally quit crying and is very content with her new digs and her parents, lol. She traveled so well for 2,600 miles from Fl. to NV. Pretty amazing for a cat that had no human contact before. We spent a lot of time with her in the half bath she was in trying to get her used to us.

Back in 1986 there were 3 cats that roamed around our apartment complex and appeared they were not fed properly or that they had no home. None had collars. Our landlord lived above us and we were not allowed to have pets.  We were able to feed them for about a year when they found out we were feeding them. We got a notice to get rid of the cats or move out. We were not about to part with our babies so we paid to board them for 6 months at the Santa Barbara Humane Society in Santa Barbara, Ca. After 6 months we were able to find a place that would let us have them with us. I visited them daily on my wayhome from work and on weekends.  Buns passed away Jan. 4, 2000 of kidney failure and we brought Mommy and her son, Boots with us to Fl. in 2001. Mommy passed on May 11, 2005 and Boots April 22, 2006. They were all so sweet and still think about them. We had them cremated and have their ashes.

Thank you again for your reply. Have a good weekend.

Ken

OH Ken.......... what another incredibly beautiful story about :rbheart: Buns, :rbheart: Boots and mommy :rbheart:.... really - that is LOVE of cats if I ever heard it. Boarding them for SIX months until you could find a place to live that allowed cats.:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap: Those :rbheart: kitties will forever by in your heart. :heart3: Bless you for that. It is amazing how these kitties find their way into our lives and make our lives complete on so many levels. I am happy you found TCS and thanks for caring for the homeless kitties. They need us, badly. :hugs: :rub: :vibes::vibes::vibes:

Absolutely wonderful story - I love hearing that cats have found their forever home with patient, loving, 2-legged's! My cats (they are really our cats, mine and my husband's, but I'm the true cat lover/adorer/rescuer) have me wrapped around their paws and I wouldn't have it any other way!  They give me joy and love tenfold over!

Thank you for the post. We love all animals but happen to have just cats. We started having cats as pets back in 1986. My post about the 3 we took in in 1986 is on this same thread that I mentioned about Sox, the feral we took in. They are strictly indoors and they are very content and so enjoyable as you well know. They own us and not the other way around. Even Sox is content and she was a true feral when we trapped her and she traveled like a champ driving across country.

I see you live in S. Carolina. We lived in Fl. from 2001 until Dec. 2011. We are both retired now and love it. We now live in NV. It gets hot here but Fl. was hot and humid. We love the west after having lived in Santa Barbara, Ca. for over 30 years.

How many furry felines to you have? Have a good weekend.
