I currently have 3 jobs; part time at a pharmacy (been there for over 6 years, hate it), part time at a pet store (been there since April, LOVE it), and part time as a product demonstrator for a pet food company (been there since November, LOVE it). Up until about a month ago, I was full time at the pharmacy, but my whole goal was to get another job so that I could quit at the pharmacy, so a few months after getting the pet store job I went down to part time there by giving up one shift a week. Since doing that, money is still a bit tighter than I am completely comfortable with and I'm starting to have some real problems at the pharmacy that are causing me a lot of stress, so needless to say, I want out of there.

I was offered a position at a different pharmacy (same company, different store) that would mean a raise but there isn't a guarantee in hours so it's entirely possible that I would end up not making as much money. I was still thinking of taking it, simply to get out of the hostile working environment, but I have some concerns which I've talked over with my father. He was telling me to go for it, until this evening.

Tonight I was browsing around online at different job postings in the animal care field. I found two positions which I'm going to for in the morning. The first is for a part time receptionist, it's been posted for nearly two months now. The second is for a full time animal care attendant, it's been posted for about two weeks now. I'm going to apply to them, keep my eye on the job posting website to see if they've been taken down, give them about two weeks and then if the other position is still available and I haven't heard from them by then I'll accept their offer.

If you could spare some job vibes, that work so well!, I would really appreciate it. I would love the Animal Care Attendant  position or the receptionist position.

I submitted both resumes and cover letters today, I heard back from one immediately. The job had been filled but they hadn't taken the posting down yet. Did I mention that this posting had been up since June 7th? I'm wondering when they filled it and why it wasn't taken down. The site that I found the jobs on has a very strict policy for taking down the ads within a certain amount of time after they've been filled. If they fail to take them down in time three times in a row, they're banned from posting job listings for a year or two (I can't remember which, my friend that's a vet tech in another city told me this as they use the site all the time). As much as it sucks that I didn't get it, I'm glad they let me know that it had been filled. I haven't responded to her at all yet, but I'm considering and (nice) response thanking her for letting me know and to please keep my resume on file in case something else comes up. It was the part time position, so that's ok since I really should have a full time one anyways.

I also found another posting for a kennel attendant at a boarding facility that I'm considering applying for. It's very similar to the one that I really want but it's further away from me that I'd really like and only part time. It does have the potential to turn into fulltime though. I may just apply for it and then go from there, it was just posted on the 24th.

All I know for sure is that I have to do something soon, I'm burning myself out with stress from the pharmacy job and am starting to get short with my friends and family because of the stress and the fact that I'm always so tired from the hours at the pharmacy.

I haven't heard anything back yet... but I keep applying to different places and not just here in London, some are in other cities. I'm trying to keep it within an hour or less of London so I can commute for the first few months and make sure I like the job and can handle it before moving everything (and everyone) there. One of the jobs was at an SPCA shelter (can't remember whether it was no kill or not) but one of my friends works for the Humane Society and has done kennel work, she said it's very stressful and hard so commuting for the first bit is a very good idea.

I was talking to my mom today about how stressed out and tired I am, she offered to take me away for a few days to a week somewhere in a month or so if I have enough vacation time saved up. I have to check on that (tomorrow) and get back to her, hopefully I can manage it because I am in serious need of a vacation!

In about two days I will officially be a student again (although, only part time). One of my friends showed me an online program through the college here for Veterinary Office Management. I talked to a few people that work in the field, they said even though I have the experience and the certificate isn't required, if someone else applies that has the same experience and the certificate, they would get the job over myself. They also said that I would get a higher wage to start with this program. My friend had just enrolled in it, I sent most of my stuff off yesterday and am just waiting for my registration to go through so I can get my student number and finish applying for OSAP. Thank god my income was much lower last year that it will be this year, I'm plenty below the cut off whereas this year I would be just below it. The total cost for the program is around $4000 which isn't too bad. I've signed up for two courses for this semester, next semester I'm going to try to do three and then the fourth semester I'll try to do four so that I can have it all done in a year (year round), otherwise I'll just do two a semester and have it done in a year and a half (year round). The timing is almost perfect because my friend is also taking it, so we'll be able to talk about things we don't understand and that kind of thing.

In a few months, after I'm partway through the first few classes, I'm going to start applying for jobs again and hopefully just saying that I'm taking the program will give me an extra boost to help get me in somewhere.

I think that is a very smart decision. Getting that certificate will definitely open up more doors for you in that field. GOOD FOR YOU, hun. AND best of luck. I hope you can take that vacation with your mom!!! :D

Thanks! I've wanted to go back to school for something vet related for quite some time now, but couldn't figure out how to do it without going into mounds of debt and having to quit my jobs and move. This is the perfect solution and I was even more thrilled when I found out that I could possibly get OSAP (a provincial student loan) to pay for it. I had to pay when I registered, but my dad paid for now and I will give him the money when my OSAP is approved, or pay it back to him over time if I don't get OSAP. I just have to print a piece of paper, sign it, and send it off with the my proof of income this week, then I'll have to wait and see. I start classes on September 7th, this semester I'm taking Veterinary Terminology and Building and Maintaining Customer Relationships, I know quite a bit of the Veterinary Terminology already, and I've worked in Customer Service for 7 years now, so hopefully I won't have too much trouble with them. Next semester I'm going to take Veterinary Lab Procedures, Veterinary Surgical Procedures and Veterinary Lab Procedures, hopefully I'll be working in an office by then and will be able to learn hands on as I'm taking the courses, if not, hopefully I'll get enough OSAP for that semester so that I won't have to work quite as much and can focus more on my education. My third semester will hopefully be Basic Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Anesthesia and Veterinary Office Skills and Procedures, then my final semester will just be one course, Animal Husbandry II. If I can fit four courses into my second semester then I can do it in three semesters, otherwise I will have to take four because of the prerequisites.

I'm going to try to take a few days off before the start of September and do something with my mom, if not, then we'll just have to go somewhere that I can have internet access so I can still study and what not while I'm on vacation!

Good luck with school.
I went back to school starting last December and I finished my course on the 3rd of this month. I had wanted to go back for years and had the same problem, I didn't want to have a ton of debt. I was looking into OSAP, but because I had gotten laid off I ended up getting Second Career which worked out better because I don't have to pay it back.
