He isn't very nice :( My mom and I have both tried petting him and holding him, but he spits at us and gave my mom a pretty good scratch.

I know that he's probably just scared, but I'm a little bit worried. I mean, he really does have such an adorable face, but we need to get these kittens used to people!

How old is the kitten?  If he is spitting, I would assume just a few weeks old.  This is normal and he is just scared.  Your scent probably scares him the most, and then to be picked up might really be a scary sensation.

Pet him while he is on the floor and talk to him a lot.  Let him smell you and hear you.  Put a worn t-shirt near where he sleeps.  Some cats do not like to be held at all.

Get one of those cat toys that have the pole with a string/feathers or something on the end and try playing with him. Be very slow moving around him and don't corner him. Treats and canned food are also good for winning over some love. And don't act nervous around him. They can sense what you're feeling. Give him some calm, happy, gentle, caring vibes. He'll get used to you eventually!

And if all else fails, don't let him intimidate you. If he knows you'll run when he hits you, he'll keep doing it. If he knows you're not afraid of it and it's doing nothing for him, chances are he'll stop. That's what we had to do with the 5 week old kitten we got in the spring. 3 days later she was as tame as our little ones are now!

Well, unfortunately :) there is no time frame as each kitten's underlying personality and temperament is so different. Being a feral kitten on top of that makes it even more tricky. I know you need to get them adopted but I am hoping that someone will come along and be willing to take their time socializing this cute little kitten. It takes a lot of patience, love and nurturing to get some of them to come around. I usually schedule feed the kittens so that they learn to look for you at mealtimes. A really good canned kitten food will help. Once they learn to trust you, the rest will fall quickly into place. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
