In Ohio, with a houseful of Kitties
My neighbor  found a tiny kitten on her deck today. She waited and looked no sign of mom or other kittens. He is about 3 weeks old. I just so happen to have a stray mom i took in that had 6 kittens 3 weeks ago. I gave him some KMR, his eyes looked sunken in. He drank a decent amount from a bottle. He looks good, so I tried to introduce him to mama kitty. No way!! she hissed and howled. She kept kicken him away while her babies were nursing. So I took him out and let  her calm down. I seperate mama from kittys when she eats, so I can tidy up the kennal and put fresh blankets in. I handle the babies, so they become accustom to human touch. I had an idea to wipe all the kittens with a dryer sheet so they all smell the same. I layyed them all back together with the orphan kitty and let them fall asleep. Then after mom was done eating, I let her back in and she did as usual, went to her babies and layed down to let them nurse. No problem he found a nip and ate like a champ!! Yay!!! I just hope she doesn't reject him once the smell wears off!! any other ideas!!

Congrats!  Seems promising.  Thank you for rescuing this kitty.  Perhaps the mother was trying to relocate some of her babies to a new nest?

I think the baby will be fine.  The baby didn't smell like kitties or mama ... that's why she freaked.  I think as long as you pet the kittens and her, then pet the orphan, it should be ok as long as they all smell the same.  Once the orphan is in there with the other kittens and they walk on each other and sleep on top of each other, the other kittens scent will be on the orphan.  I'd keep an eye on them just in case.  :)
