Recently, I've gotten very interested in contacting various pet food companies and reading their replies. I decided I would do that, and post the responses I get on here (if that is ok with the staff, of course).
The email I sent to each of the companies was slightly different, because each company uses different ingredients. The companies I emailed were:
Hills
Purina
Eukanuba (Iams)
Whiskas
Meow Mix
Will update here when I get some replies!! :lol3:

The book Buyer Beware has a whole chapter about the responses from pet food companies to emails with specific questions regarding the ingredients they use. Susan Thixton quoted entire emails and explained what was wrong with each one. That chapter was written to point out the zillion half-truths and common practice of keeping secrets. For example, when someone asked an unnamed company if there is any ethoxiquin in their fish all they said was they do not add any ethoxiquin. That does not answer the question, which really was, "Do any of your fish suppliers use ethoxiquin?" That is proof there really is ethoxiquin in the fish and the company does not want customers to know about it. So while it may seem like a great idea to contact them and I would love to do the same thing, unfortunately you will not get any answers that way unless your question is, "Why do you use carrageenan?" or something like that.
