We have 8 cats of our own and for 2 weeks have been taking care of 3 now 5 week olds and just a week ago got 4 now 2 week olds.

The older 3 were from the feral colony next door and had horrible eye infections and were infested with fleas. Their mom had been dragging them around since day one and would leave them in the open while she went off to go sunbathe and do whatever. Their mother's a very pretty diluted tortie and just around a year old herself. She seems happy as could be even after we took in the trio.

The trio consists of a gray and white male (our runt Mica), a diluted calico female (little Pip who has a home and will go to it after we get his fixed in a few weeks), and a cream and white female (Cheeto who had a home but not anymore and is the biggest of this group)

Those ones eyes are all better now and they're energetic playful little devils! The runt of that litter is the sweetest and cuddliest one and is keeping up with his bigger sisters pretty well.

Now our younger 4 are doing great! We got them because my aunt called my mom crying because they were out in the open on a really hot day out in the sun all morning. She got them inside and cooled off and I went and picked them up. They were hot and lethargic then but ate well and ever since that night have been little piggies and are very active and eat well.

Just earlier this week we started opening our eyes and now we're even starting to walk (shakily, but they're getting quite well at doing it!) the trio LOVES these little ones and cuddle and wash them.

This litter consists of a tabby female (Ivy who was first to open her eyes), a tuxedo female (Fern who was the first to start "walking"), a tuxedo male (Chip who's the runt but has his eyes wide open and walking with his sisters), and a mostly black with a little white male (Thunder who we may end up keeping and is the biggest of the litter)

We thought Thunder would be doing everything first, but while all the others are starting to walk, he's still dragging his belly. They all opened their eyes completely within a day of each other and the same day their eyes started opening, Thunder's eyes started opening a couple days after the others' and his one eye is still only half open after 3 days (his one eye finally opened all the way today!) He's a big sweetie, purrs all the time, eats well, and is active. Just a little slower at developing than the others which is shocking.

Anybody have any idea why he's behind his siblings when he was definitely not the runt? I say since he's special and seems to be just like my cat Felix (who we got from the same colony as the trio 7 years ago when he was 4 weeks old) that we should keep him. I think my mom's considering keeping him too! She thinks his little black nose is adorable. For a while we thought his eyes weren't going to open and she told my aunt if he ended up being a blind kitten we'd keep him. He's special anyway though and it's looking like he's our baby.

A runt is an extremely small kitten, usually weak as well, not just one who happens to be the smallest of the group - after all someone has to be smallest.

Kittens develop at different rates, size has nothing to do with it. And at just 2 weeks you can't say who'll be first to do everything, they've got a lot of developing and learning to do.

When I got M&M they were 14 or 15 weeks old - can't remember - and Minnie was tiny for her age, and very backwards looking in both face and coat.  However the breeder said 'she doesn't know she's tiny' and that was spot on.  She was confident and outgoing (once she'd got over the shock of Rufus) and is now 3.5 kg and a Minx.  Physical and mental development can happen at different rates in different kittens.

Agree most litters don't have a runt.
