Hi,

I got bitten by a cat 2 days ago. The bite is not deep and there's a small amount of blood that came out. I think it's healing now. Should i worry about this?  and do you think if the wound is healing i'm safe from rabies?  Any advice will be appreciated :)

Btw, it's not my cat. I don't know if it has an owner.

thanks,

Hi... I hope you washed it really well and applied some disinfectant?  You will need to keep an eye on it...Check for warmth, redness and swelling.

Just because a wound is healing doesn't mean you are rabies-free, but from what I can tell, rabies is pretty rare (are you in the US?)  I'm in Australia, so I'll wait for someone more knowledgeable to give advice on that.

If you haven't had a recent tetanus shot, you might want to ask your doctor about that.

it's good that it bled. that helped clean it out. a lot of puncture wounds don't bleed and get infected. the safest course would be to take a prophylactic dose of Augmentin for 5 days and get a tetanus shot if it's been more than 5 years since the last tetanus shot.

guidelines for rabies:

if the animal was not captured and if the animal was a cat or dog, rabies vaccine & immune globulin is only needed if there is a rabies risk for that species in your area.
