I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post.  If not feel free to move it.  We got a kitten yesterday that is 4 months old.  The previous owner never took it to the vet and insists it's a male, but it looks very female to me.  I probably wouldn't even second guess myself except that the woman seemed so sure it was a little boy.  Any help is greatly appriciated, I hope this picture is good enough, and sorry for posting cat bum LOL.

Looks like a girl to me as well.  And at 4 months it's a good time to get her neutered.  Can we see a photo of her face, please?

Absolutely looks like a girl. At 4 months old you'd definitely be seeing some "kitty cotton puffs" (my word for feline testes :lol3:) growing. The previous owner probably just doesn't know how to sex kittens.

I would love to know why anybody might think that cat is a boy. Even after they are neutered, tomcats do not look similar under their tails.

I'm not sure, she was just so convinced though.  She asked me how "he's" doing via email, and I replied always saying he instead of she, because when I suggested (a week ago when I first went to visit) that "he" looked to be a "she", she seemed a bit offended that I would question her ability to determine the sex of her kitten.  I was going to show her a picture but then she'd wonder about the pink collar she's now wearing LOL.

That woman needs to learn some things about feline anatomy. Show her a picture of a tomcat's butt so she can see the (very obvious) difference.

It's the coloring. . .I raised an orphan tabby kitten who looks like that under the tail, and I wasn't positive she was a she until about that age, when no testicles showed up. The black spots on the sides there really do look like baby (undescended) testicles. And I like to think I'm good at sexing kittens!

But I guess she really is a tortie :tongue2:.

I read you can't tell the sex of a newborn kitten because the testicles don't drop in utero. But at four months old, the testicles would have dropped by now if the OP's kitten was a tomcat.

Kittens are best sexed at birth Emily, it's very easy to tell at that time. In the days following they can swell and be harder to tell, a few days later they're back to normal

I've been able to tell the sex of 4 different litters at birth, the latest being 4 days after birth and haven't been wrong yet!

Definitely a little girl!

14 kittens sexed at birth and 6 at hours old.  All right and one even at 8 weeks had a tech fooled!

I guess it will sink in when you say "She did great from her spay."  and mention something about her shaved belly in case she thinks you think spay is for a boy.

I normally can sex kittens so easily! This one looked different from her sisters and there were no boys in the litter for comparison. She still kind of looks like a boy back there. I should get pics sometime.

I was told by someone who had kittens any time you went to her house(she was a kid so parents fault) that this one was a girl 100 percent.  Wrongly named for over a week till first vet visit.  I never looked and only cat I had at time was neutered anyways.

Being neutered changed nothing. You would have thought Wilbur still had his testes if you saw his butt. I guess it varies how much the scrotum shrinks after the testis is removed.

And at what age it is done.  My done at 7 weeks look smaller then the 9 1/2 week olds.   Just like in humans different guys different sizes to start with lol.

LOL, yes that would be funny except given her lack responsible ownership and the fact that her cats hadn't been to the vet, she would probably think a spay is for a male LOL.  She still had the mother of this cat who was barely a year herself and wanted to separate them soon because she didn't want "him" getting her pregnant again.  Fair enough concern had he been a male, but I couldn't understand why the heck she wasn't getting the mom spayed.  My kitten has never even been to the vet st 4 months old.  That's about to change on Friday :)

Here's a picture of my gender-bending little girl:

The OP's kitty doesn't look this much like a boy, but I can see why the previous owner thought she was a he.

My mom had a "male" kitten who was given to her by her high school biology teacher (lol) who had kittens. You'd think they would have figured it out by then but, well, some people :tongue2:.
