Hi, I have a 3 year old cat and she has just had her second litter. Her first litter was very good, no problems and she had 5 healthy kittens. We had her booked for getting spayed and my 3 year old let her out. Anyways last night around 11:20pm she had her first kitten, healthy, nursed right away. The second kitten came about 20-30 minutes later. About 20 mins after the second one came, she became disinterested in it. I tried to see if it would nurse but it was weak and died about 5 mins after that. I looked it over and where the umbilical cord should be there was a hole. Very sad it died, but now I was worried about more. Both placentas came out and were consumed so I assumed everything was ok, but it is now 9pm and it seemed in labor on and off all day, but now she is wandering through the house. We have kept her secluded, because we have a very nosy dog and it seemed to stress her out to have him near. She wouldn't stay still enough to labor last night without me touching her, and if I hadn't laid her down on a towel, she would have had them on me. So my husband and I have taken turns laying with her and we took the dog for a walk to take some stress away. Now we are home and she was digging at the door to get out, so we did. I am just worried about how long she can stay away from the kitten, and I think she is still in labor. She is starting to breathe a bit heavier and has fluids (clear and bloody-ish). Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks

If she seems distressed, or in a unfruitful labor a longer time, you should contact a vet - she knows which follow up questions to give. Be prepared to rush in with the cat.  So do phone ASAP now.

If she would be contend and at ease, you wouldnt not need to be anxious even if you suspected there was more.   But this doesnt not be the case here.

Dont let her out from the house either.  If she wanders around the house, look if she maybe delivers somewhere else too. If next kittens dying or dead, she will dont bother about them too, or even eat up them at once.

Good luck!

She needs a vet asap. Prolonged labour without result requires a vet. Please don't go out and leave her alone, she needs you with her at all times during birth. Don't let her wander the house, put her in the birthing pen and stay in the room with her - after the vets of course. She may need a shot of oxytocin, there could be a kitten stuck.

You may need to step in and bottle feed the kitten with Colostrum formula then regular kitten formula in a day or so (don't have my tin of colostrum on me at the moment), baby also needs to be kept warm and will require feeding every 2 hours.

Just for future reference, she could still have been spayed once you got her back inside.

If vet is not open, take her to animal hospital, i think they are 24/7.

I wish her very well. She needs cozy quiet spot, with access to water & food & litter box.

Maybe an opened closet space in a quiet room with dim lighting.

Best Wishes for your cats. If you live in a multi floor home, maybe doggie should temporarily be on another floor.

Please don't let your cats roam outdoors.

My family has huge yard & they take cats outdoors supervised in section of yard, they enjoy the grass etc & then they have 3 cozy cages on top of each other on side porch under tree & flowers & they love relaxing in there outdoors.

It is absolutely not safe for cats to roam all over.

Domesticated cats when spayed/ neutered are extremely happy with set up like my families set up.

Please make sure you get all cats fixed when they are ready.

There are many organizations that have free or low cost spay/ neuter programs.

i wish your kitties all the best & hope she gets through her labor safely & without anymore stress.

You sound like sweet parents to her.

Excellent news!  Tx for telling us!    :)
the little one we have is very healthy if not a little early,
Nay, if he is very healthy, and the mom wasnt very caring in the beginning as she was wandering about, he cant be not even a little early.

Kittens are VERY sensitive for premature delivieries, much more than human babies.

Good luck!
