Hi my kitten (female) has loose stools. When fed wet pouches of food it's a lot worse but still quite bad on any brand of kitten biscuits.

Is there any thing I can give change this? Getting annoyed finding cat paw shaped clumps of kitty litter/pooh

My other kitten is fine. They are different families and the one with the problem is 2weeks older than other. Oldest was born 9/3/12

So, about 4 months old, give or take.

Small kittens are prone to loose stools, because they haven't fully developed their normal intestinal flora.  However, by the time they're 3 months old, they've usually settled down.  If not, there is a problem.  You should be getting the classic "tootsie roll" droppings.

The first and most common problem is intestinal parasites.  Worms of various types, which can be pretty easily treated, and smaller parasites like giardia, coccidia, and several others.  Some of these can be difficult to find and might not appear in every bowel movement.  All those can be treated, but you need to know what you're treating.

After that, kittens can have sensitivities to various cat food ingredients, including wheat, grain, and even beef or chicken.

One thing to check:  You're not giving the kitten milk by any chance, are you?

Thanks for replies. Firstly, nope not giving milk. Jessie was spayed almost 2 weeks ago and with her check up she and Alfie had a worming tablet each so hopefully it's not worms?
How do I check for any of the things mentioned? I can't afford another trip to the vet just yet as they cost me £200 on the last 2 weeks with having vaccinations, Jessie's spaying etc
I did mention it to the bet but she didn't seem bothered.

The worming tablet you got was probably for the common worms.  It may not affect tapeworms, which are common but not that serious a problem (though certainly very high on the "ick" scale).  The others can only be found with a microscopic fecal exam.

But I assume you're in the UK.  Someone there will have to tell you just what is likely in your area.  It's not cheap taking care of a free kitten, is it?

Just in passing, if you get these things treated and then keep your cats indoors, they are much less likely to pick up any of them.

The tablet given was milbemax. The nurse pointed to a tapeworm picture on the wall so I guess it should cover that too?

Yeah I'm in the UK, south Hampshire. Alfie has never been outside, Jessie has but not in my ownership. I got her when she was 14 weeks old at begging of June and she had been outside.

Btw I'm not trying to avoid a vet visit, just seeing what I could do in the mean time

Every cat is different, of course, but when I got my new kitten, he also had persistent loose stools.  I kept trying different brands of wet food, probiotics - nothing.

Then I started giving him raw food, and the problem has resolved, as if by magic.  :)

What kind of raw foods do you feed him?

So far I've been feeding him RadCat and Nature's Instinct Raw (Chicken flavor).  A natural pet store in my city gave me free samples, and they worked so well that I picked some up.  I might move up to frankenprey at some point, but right now I'm happy with the conventional.

Hello!

I too am experiencing this "poo problem" with my little 4 month old Ragdoll.

He's not had "runny" poo as such, but...squishy and smelly..and sorry to describe so vividly >_< but ...either  way it isn't firm.

I'm currently feeding him Applaws (one small tin a day with the applaws 80% meat dry kitten food to snack on)...I DO see an improvement from when we first saw his poops..but they're still squishy and such.

Have you taken any further steps since you posted this? I'd love to know more on how to help...apparantly boiled chicken is a good one...and pro biotic yogurt?

All the best!
