My cat is hospitalized for the weekend because he blocked. I was at work this morning but since this has happened before, my mom knew to be paranoid about his behavior (vomiting, lethargic, not eating, no urine in litter box) and she brought him in to the clinic I work at. We ran a urinalysis and it actually looked fine... no crystals, no white blood cells, no bacteria. Nothing was off about it.

Took an xray and there were no bladder stones. Nothing to say "aha, here's the problem." We were able to pass a urinary catheter pretty easily and get his bladder flushed out. Transferred him to the e-clinic at that point, where basically he's just being monitored and kept comfortable.

I guess I'm looking for maybe some experience/insight into why this would happen in a cat with "normal" urine. I cleaned his litter box yesterday and there was plenty of pee!! It seemingly occurred out of nowhere, whereas the first time this happened there was a buildup to the full blockage, and he actually had crystals. He's on a ground raw diet, and we add water to it so he is getting plenty of moisture in his diet, and normally has a couple of big pee clumps in his litter box every day so he's staying flushed out.

The vet is already blaming the diet... surprisingly she doesn't think he needs to be taken off raw completely, BUT she thinks we need to make some changes to it, which scares me. I don't know what his diet has affected that would have contributed to this... obviously, the urine itself is still okay....

Ugh. So confused!

What is your raw diet comprised of? When my boy Abby had a bout with IC (he never totally blocked, but was close), it was caused by an outside stressor, a kitty fight, and the fact that I was feeding only ground chicken thighs/bones/organs. Once I added chicken breast meat to this to model more what whole prey would be, he has been fine ever since. Breast meat is higher in methionine, a natural acidifier, so making this change helped my Abby.

Not sure if this fits your case, but thought I would just share my experience.
