I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive cat tree. Does anyone know of any good brands or anything? Must be able to hold at least 40lbs

Armakat B5701 is what I have for my two cats.  I did place 15lbs of weight on the bottom platform for stability as one cat gets pretty crazy jumping from the bed to the top.  I also bought larger platforms to replace the factory ones as my one kitty is pretty long.

I have the Armarkat B5701 and both my cat and kitten love it. I do think the weight idea is good though, as it can wobble a slight bit. Although there are brands out there with better quality for far more money, I think Armarkat is amazing for the price range.

Check out the boxed 3 shelf cat tree found at Walmart, it is very sturdy & is on a spring loaded extension pole it is EZ to install, I have 3 of them up & priced at about $40.00 compared to the very $$$ free standing ones they have held up just as well ( my cat swings about on them like a kid on monkey bars )

I have the armarkat A7401 I got it on Amazon for 140.00 but they currently have it listed for 131.00. My kitties love it and I'm glad I got the large tree as I now have 3 cats and there is plenty of space for them.

There are so many shapes, styles, sizes, and colors I don't know where to begin. I would be shocked if any cat tree cannot hold 40 pounds. A good cat tree should cost over $100, so you can order it from a company that advertises free shipping starting at $50 (Wag.com and Petco do this). Amazon sells literally thousands of cat trees, so you can go there and read the reviews.

The real concern, in my experience, is not whether it can hold the combined weight of your cats but whether it will tip over if one 10 pound cat leaps onto it like a lunatic.  (We had a whisker city tree from petsmart tip over with our 10 pound cat leaping onto it.  It was a great tree in every other way besides the tippiness though.) We decided to invest in a pricy, but quality Molly and Friends tree because they have the reputation of being untippable.  We've had no problem with it.  (Whether tippiness is a concern has a lot to do with placement of the tree in the room too.  We needed ours to be freestanding, not against a wall.  In a corner or against a wall I might have gone with Armarkat.)

I used to volunteer at a shelter with cat trees. The trees never tipped over, but two of them wobbled a little bit. The only problem I had with them was carpet falling off, so I highly recommend looking for sisal posts or real tree branches.

The tipping problem is why I placed a 15lb weight on the bottom.  The cats do not use the bottom platform, so it has worked out well.  I do have a crazy lunatic 12 lb cat who likes to come running at it and leap from a distance with great speed.  I have had no issues with the tree tipping without the weight, it was just added insurance so I would not worry it might happen.  ;-)

The cat tree is my avatar with the two cats sleeping on it.  It is not really big enough for three cats.  They each like their own platform to sleep and lounge.

Our tree has never even come close to tipping and my cats do running jumps onto it all the time including running up and down it. I don't even have the stairs on it, I left them off.

I just bought this one: http://www.overstock.com/Pet-Suppli...m-Cat-Tree-Pet-Furniture/5215729/product.html for our 6 cats (3 in a room at a time) $109 dollars and free shipping (Which would normally be 60 dollars) It has a slight wobble from right to left, I'd say about 1/2 to 1 inch wobble if using extreme cat jumping force, but easily fixed by placing it against a wall. (Very solid going forward <-> backward, no wobble) The perfect height for our 7' ceiling, just enough room for a cat to sleep on the highest perch. :D It's not as wide as it seems in the photo, they've stretched the picture for some reason.

One downfall though.. I sat in my room for 3 hours with no cats. :( Found the kitten sleeping in the top cubby hole with no desire to snuggle with ME.
