What cat is considered feral? I have an oudoor one that showed up, but scared to death of everything. In the time he's been here he's come to love us. Would he be considered feral?

Hi Kittycate2! It's hard to know if a cat is feral or stray. Stray cats that have been on their own for some time act like ferals, but generally they come to trust people again more quickly than would a feral cat.

Here are some links that explain the differences between ferals and strays.

Happy browsing! ...and thank you for rescuing this kitty! Does he still live outside, or is he a pet now? And I hate to be nosey... but have you had him neutered?

â€By Feral, do you mean wild?†An article by Jeri Dopp of www.safehavenforcats.com with a description of how feral colonies get started (and how we can help prevent them!)

What is a feral cat or dog? A feral animal “has lived his entire life outside, fending for himself, fighting tooth and claw for food and survival.†From the Feral Colonies forum of The Cat Site, a discussion of feral cats.

No we haven't yet. He deosn't trust us that much. Though I can carry him from the garage to the yard.

I do urge you to get him neutered as soon as possible. He really doesn't need to trust you to do this. You and he will be happier - and you'll save lots of little kittens from an unwanted, homeless life.

If he's feral and wary of a trap, we have trapping hints here: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...threadid=16045

There are lots of links to search for spay/neuter resources here: SaveSamoa.org spay/neuter page

And you can try putting his food in a crate for a few days. If he'll go in there to eat and gets used to it, all you have to do is shut the door (quickly). He won't be a happy camper on the way to the vet, but it'll be best for all of you in the long run.

Glad it sounds like you have plans to get him neutered!

He hates the carrier now. We had to put him in there twice because he was panting. He hated it both times. We have 3 dogs. He is scared to death of them.

Agree with LDG! This cat needs to be neutered - he'll get over his snit very quickly.

I've taken feral cats caught in traps and whisked them - trap and all - off to the vet to be s/n. I hate doing it, and hate scaring them but just keep telling myself "It's for their own good!"

Yep and it is for their own good. They simmer down quick enough when they realize there is little other choice available.

If he is getting used to you than he would surly be a stray. Maybe a long time stray.
Hope all goes well with his neutering.
