We had some wicked winds with a thunderstorm yesterday and it did some damage to my garden.  I was just outside checking things over and I found what I believe is a Tomato Hornworm eating at one of my tomato plants.  There was a small, flying insect buzzing around it and the worm was trying to attack the bug too.

I searched online and I'm pretty sure that is what it is.  So now how do I get rid of them?  I saw some methods online.  I do not see myself picking them off...even with long sleeves and gloves!!  I can't count on DH to do it and he isn't available to help till the weekend anyway.

Any experience with them?  Am I going to have to try with some gloves on?  Is there a product that I could find somewhere easily?  I dont go all out organic; but with something like tomatoes it seems like I should consider it more.

The easiest way to get rid of them is picking them off by hand.  In the time it takes for a product to kill them, they can do a ton of damage.  They don't bite lol

Over the river and through the woods...
Try a mixture of garlic powder, vinegar and Dawn with a little bit of water. That takes care of most insects. I don't about worms but it's worth a try. A girl at work told me about that last year and it's worked pretty good.

I'll try that mixture.  It's supposed to rain a lot today and I'm at the mercy of my kids...grr...yesterday they gave me zero alone time from dawn till I went to bed....

well then have your kids pick the hornworms off your tomatoes.  make it into a game and pay a quarter per hornworm or something like that plus a bonus for whoever collects the most.

You can also snip them in half with your pruners!  That's what I do when hubby's not around.

Hmm...maybe I can get some kids from church to do that!  DD probably wont do it...and she's only 2.

I put on my long sleeve gardening shirt and my gloves and went out with the big pruners....and I couldn't find the darn thing!  I found the damage!  I found it's droppings...but not him.  I went out again later and I still can't find it.  I'm going to see if DH will help me look tomorrow.

in my experience, they work from the top down.  find the lowest spot of damage and the hornworm won't be far away
