I'm trying to switch my 2 Bengals(both 6yrs old) from dry food to wet and I'd like to know what brand is the healthiest. I made the mistake of feeding them Science Diet since they were kittens because I thought it was healthy and now I find out it's terrible. One of my boys is sick(possibly with kidney issues) so it's important that I get them eating right. I stood in the pet store for almost 30 minutes today trying to read the labels of the canned food and I was completely confused because it was unclear to me what was good and what was crap. I don't have any trust in these companies or how they label their products so I'm reaching out to see if anyone can suggest anything.

my cats really like Chicken Catcciatori : Earthborn Holistic Pet Food

http://www.earthbornholisticpetfood.com/us/cat_formulas/chicken_catcciatori/

its not cheap, but good cat food costs...the earthborn has real shredded chicken

others that are really good food, wellness chicken, turkey...

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul is cheaper., and i don,t  think its too bad

i stay away from wet food that has meat by products, grains.....

natural balance is not too bad, though my cats prefer the others..

evo is good if p&g has not changed it yet...

i stay away from dry,,,,i have read the worst wet is better than the best dry, reason, water....

I would recommend Weruva (the carrageenan free kinds, make sure to check the label for that), BFF and Nature's Variety Instinct 95%. They're the best canned foods, IMO.

Honestly, you'd be hard-pressed to find a canned food worse than dry Science Diet. So any canned food would be an improvement, especially for a kitty with compromised kidneys. I don't know what your budget range is, but do a little research, decide which ingredients you'd rather avoid, then buy one can of everything that fits your criteria in your price range, and see what your kitties like best. Try to maintain a rotation of at least 5-6 different brands/flavors for optimal variety.

If you go for cheaper foods, avoid the shreds and chunks--they're usually made with wheat gluten or soy protein. The paté foods are much better (I feed my cats Friskies paté). The pricier shredded foods are usually made with real meat, though.

That's not true. You would be shocked how bad Whiskas dry food is.

For a cat with comprimised kidneys, the best thing is Weruva because it is 80 percent water and has human grade meat.

I didn't say that Science Diet is the worst dry food. . .there are a TON of dry foods worse than Science Diet (for the record, after reading every cat food label at the store, I decided that Alley Cat is the worst name-brand dry food :tongue2:). I said that almost all CANNED foods are better than Science Diet dry food. Which is true.

 I agree!

Blue Wilderness Wild Delights and Blue Bistro or also some good ones (low carb, no carrageenan). Considering your situation, I would try and feed exclusively wet if possible and try and avoid the fish ones as well (if you must, don't feed more than once/week, also fish is addictive). Rotating between 5 or 6 brands is ideal since it can prevent pickyness, sensitivities and it rotates nutrients (since each food is different).

Happy wet food searching!

Are these brands that I can find at Petsmart? or is it something I have to find online or at a specialty store?

I don't know alot about ingredients but I'd like to avoid as much of the bad stuff as possible. I don't mind increasing what I'm spending on food to help their health although I'm pretty clueless about the price ranges/brands. I just want to make sure if I'm paying the additional cost I'm actually getting the quality. All this time that I've been buying Science Diet I've been paying for what I thought was quality and it turns out I could have been buying Walmart cat  food & probably would have been just the same.

What about considering a raw diet? There are some great frozen commercial products available that make it almost as easy as opening a can, and not necessarily more expensive. Many people even make their own raw, which takes a bit more work but can bring costs down quite a bit. A balanced raw diet can be one of the best things to feed kitties with health issues.

I'm willing to look into it and keep an open mind but for now I think making the switch to canned is my first step.

I'm in Canada, and I don't shop at Petsmart so I looked on the website for you. :lol3: I don't think they have Weruva or BFF, but they do certainly have Natures Variety and the Blue products. Another good brand is By Nature.

I'm going for a consultation now with the vet at Banfield to go over my cat's lab results since my other vet wasn't very helpful at explaining things or giving me a clear diagnosis. I will see what he/she suugests for diet. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions it helps me to be able to ask informed question when I speak to the vet.

My bad ( brain cramps ) Petsmart has a in house brand called Simply Nourish & it is made by Weruva , and as far as I can tell is the same high quality.

Just a wee little correction: Weruva doesn't make Simply Nourish. They do produce Petco's house brand, Soulistic, but not the Petsmart one.

I wonder who does, the cans are exactly the same odd size & the contents, look & smell like the Soulistic/Weruva off shoot.Anyhoo they are an excellent canned food & reasonably priced.

That should be interesting. Banfield vet food recommendations I mean. Let us know!

Congratulations on wanting to get your cats on a wet food diet. You will be thrilled with the improvements in their coats, activity level, litter box habits (more pee, but less poop) and just general air of well being!

I feed a lot of the brands mentioned in this thread, rotating as much as possible.
