I've been giving it to my cat everyday. She never had hairballs, but started it for her coat AND it keeps her regular like clockwork daily.
I started off at 1/4 teaspoon and slowly went to 1/2 teaspoon daily. She loves it though it has no taste or smell.

I have used it for Cody in his food.................be sure you aren't buying an inferior brand with the price being that low. Some of the more inferior brands are inexpensive. I also use it for me and have cooked with it. The health benefits are amazing!

Yes, I cook with it all of the time, and I feed it to both my cats and my dogs.  Costco now has a certified organic coconut oil in a large jar, and the price is good too.  It is wonderful to find a product that is both good and good for you and your pets.

What an interesting thread! I have a jar of coconut oil I bought for my son's skin upon recommendation from a doctor. He had (and is still struggling with) some kind of skin problem and the doctor said since it wont irritate the skin, and has anti-inflammatory properties to boot, to put it on him.

The other night, I was finding new and exciting uses for coconut oil and oiling the wood cabinets in my kitchen with a little tub I had set aside from the jar. My kitty, Maude, came up and started eating it! She was super excited about it! I was a little worried it may not be good for her so I shooed her away, but it's good to hear it's actually good for kitties!

Today upon reading this thread I let her lap up a little bit and smoothed some on her coat. I'm not sure she likes it on her coat though, maybe I put too much. She also has flea allergy dermatitis so I put some little globs on her itchy spots. I had been thinking about doing this before when the doctor recommended it for my sons skin condition but I hadn't looked up if it was safe for cats yet! So glad I found this thread. Coconut Oil is awesome!

My cat eats small amounts of coconut oil, but only particular odorless brand, Chapmann's Farms, not Extra Virgin one. Cold season only. No side effects in 2 yrs.

I had posted on another thread about using coconut oil. I'm just wondering if anyone else uses it with their cats, or even themselves for that matter.
My step-mother takes coconut oil daily to slow the progress of her Alzheimer's.

It worked incredibly well for 2-3 years but the disease is too virulent to stop completely and there comes a point where the coconut oil just isn't enough.

I first heard about it quite by accident on Twitter years ago and suggested it to her. My father says he noticed an improvement almost immediately and can always tell when my step-mother misses a day.

It needs to be pure (organic is best) coconut oil. About a teaspoon in the mornings is enough. My step-mother melts it in her oatmeal.

It's not a cure, but anything that helps is welcomed. For more info, search YouTube on the subject.

I use it for my self (cooking, hair, bath scrubs, chapped lips, etc). As for cat, I was told by my vet recently that since my cat doesn't not like the flavor of the hairball stuff that I could use that once a week instead, but doesn't recommend both or large amounts of coconut oil l, as it may hurt the stomach or cause soft stools.

Bring me oil from your virgin coconuts! (Insert evil laughter)

Seriously, though, I no longer use any other cooking oil (save olive oil for certain dishes). I occasionaly (sp!) Use it as a moisturizer. Great for rashes, etc. It is SOOOOO much healthier than vegetable oil or canola oil. There is such a thing as healthy fat, and that is one of them.

The key is defining what kind you are using. Refined coconut oil will have no taste and no odor, unlike vegetable, canola, and olive. It brings out the taste of the actual food, IMO. Unrefined (or virgin) coconut oil is where most of the other benefits come in. I know many people that ingest more than a tablespoon every day. Many even take it in their coffee (some also add a little butter, another health fat).

I have not asked Avalon and Shima if they like the virgin coconut oil. We have had a rough couple days (I am fostering a third cat while we find a home for her, and they accidently ended up in a room together with no proper introductions, and they still avoid interaction with me at all).

I live in Denver. The air is really dry here, and we have forced air in the house. My Luuk has had real problems with dry, itchy skin all winter. I tried everything.  Finally I started giving him an oatmeal/baking soda bath to relieve the itching. However, found that I had to give him a bath a couple times a week and even then he still licked and bit out patches of fur. Now, I've added a couple capfulls of mineral oil to his final rinse. It seems to be doing the trick. I may switch to coconut oil.

Make sure to get virgin coconut oil. :-)

Avalon and Shima (whom I verified is actually a girl - there was some question. She has been bullying Avalon lately) tried the coconut oil today. I think they like it!

I give them wet food once a day, so even if they do not like it, I can mix a little bit in. They have long hair, so hoping for a good coat once they lose their kitten fluff.

I had a cat a few years back that started losing her mind, very paranoid, hiding, didn't even recognize me until I was within a few feet of her.  I found a woman who diagnoses issues based on saliva.  Long story short, my kitty had mold growing in her brain!  There were a ton of supplements she had me use (most of which were people products).  But since I couldn't get kitty to take them all, I asked for priority.  Besides probiotics (if you and your pet aren't taking them, start today!) she said coconut oil.  Luckily, that kitty liked the taste and i kept a spoon of it near me...every time she came by, I got her to lick some off the spoon--probably about 2 tablespoons a day.  It brought her brain back!!!  Now...if I could only get my new kitty interested in it...

I've given it to my cat mixed in her food and she eats it just fine. However, when I tried to rub it in her fur, her ear started to swell. I think she might be allergic to it? I've looked it up and it sounds rare, but I am hesitant to try it again, even in her food even though she doesn't react to eating it.

Hmmm I'm no expert, but I've never heard of an allergy to it...it's possible.  i will say that not all coconut oils are created equal...for my own internal consumption, I get the gold label from tropical traditions.  They have a video on how it's hand-harvested and gently / cold produced.  You can definitely smell the coconut compared to even fancy organic ones from the stores.  Perhaps you got a coconut oil that has something else, e.g. solvent in it or something?  If not, there are lots of other essential fat options...

Which brand do you use? I've tried three different ones (all organic) and can't find one they like.

Any health food store.  Or the health food section of the Grocery store.  Try the Spectrum brand.

I don't know if the brand matters much to them liking it...my cat that liked it didn't care what brand, while the one now who doesn't also doesn't care what brand--but then, he doesn't like any foods either, the fussball!
