That is almost hard to believe of NYACC  Just shockingly sad. I certainly think that they will have this problem solved as of today. This won't go on, I am sure, another day. Sad, sad situation for those kitties and the families that were going to adopt them. :shame: Most of these places put ADOPTED across the cats cage the day they get adopted or IF they get notification of another shelter that will have room to take certain cats off death row. I can't believe the huge mistake made in the name of these cat's lives. :sobbing:

Obviously the reason they did not have the word ADOPTED on their cage doors was they were not adopted yet. Somebody put in a request to adopt a cat and had to wait a certain amount of time to bring the kitty home. So no, they were not adopted.

I assume the 12 people who tried to adopt those cats will go to a no-kill shelter when they try again.

Those people who request a certain cat to be saved absolutely are considered adoptors. Once the cat is chosen via computer, it is suppose to be taken off the euthanasia list for that day and the adoptors will come in and pick up the requested cat. It is the same procedure for shelter rescuers who save a group of cat's at the eleventh hour. They are required to get those adopted/requested cat within a day.

Then why didn't they just pick up the cats on the same day they submitted their request? You should be able to take a cat home on the day you request it.

Probably because they do the euthanasia's in the morning and it was too late by the time the adoptors arrived when Animal control opens to the public. They put the cat's on the list at 5 PM and rescuers have till 6 AM the next morning to save a cat. Then they would go and get the requested cat that day, the morning after the list from the night before.

What a sad situation. I bet that won't happen again. Computers can have software issues and what a shame that they trusted the new program before getting the glitches worked out....... Poor kitties....

Many shelters require a waiting period while they check references (which is as it should be), some even do home visits first. I won't comment on the story, I can't read it. I just wanted to comment on this.

It could be a situation like when I pull from one of the high kill shelters here, I live 3 hours away and can not make it there the same day I commit to the cat. I can usually come the next day or a few days latter and the shelter will hold them, or if there is no space there is a voluenteer down there that works closely with the shelter and she sometimes will pull and keep them in a dog crate at her house till I can get down there. Without her I actually would not be able to save any because she can get them from the shelter for me even on days they are closed to the public (which is 4 days a week).

I am pretty sure that shelter does a lot of networking on faceboook to try to get the urgent animals adopted, many adopters are not in the area, several shelters here do the same.

I don't blame you Otto. Basically, the story is somebody changed the computer program for listing Death Row animals and somehow adopted cats were listed by accident.

I adopted my three cats from different shelters. All three shelters have a first-come-first-serve policy: if you see a cat online, you need to hurry to make sure you get it.
