Could this be ringworm?

Hi all,

I posted here on the 1st about Squee's occasional ear problems (tilting ear, scratching and pawing at it like she's cleaning it. This lasts a few hours and then it goes back to normal - this doesn't happen very often). That day, her ear was bothering her again, but for the first time, it was red and warm to the touch. It lasted for less than a day when the vet office was closed, so I didn't take her in, which I regret. Last night she was tilting her ear again for a few hours, but then it stopped.

Today I noticed that she had those weird red spots between her eye and ear again, this time on both sides. I don't think it's from itching because I rarely see her itch her left ear. Anyway, she was acting normal and then she had a short nap. When she woke up, I saw that there was a large patch of fur missing on the top of her right ear - the ear that tends to irritate her. The patch of missing fur is slightly larger than a Canadian dime. The skin underneath is bright red with some bloody spots, like it was rubbed or irritated with something. She's still acting normal but shaking her head.

The first thought that came to mind: rubbing her fur off, but she's been sleeping in the same room with me for the past two hours. Then I thought ringworm (though I haven't seen a photo of ringworm on the outside of a cat's ear) and a yeast infection inside the ear. Does it sound like ringworm to anyone else?

Any way you could get a photo up? Maybe someone would recognize what it is from a picture.

That does not look like ringworm to me. Patricia had it when she was a kitten (apparently acquired at the shelter, where cats are not in cages) and her only symptom was dark brown patches on her face. No blood, no ear problems, no pain. Just dark brown splotches. But I know if she had not be medicated, other symptoms could have appeared.

Is that the back of her right ear?

IMHO it looks like impetigo, and it is a bacterial infection. A consult with a pet care professional would be the next step...

We took Squee to the vet today. She said Squee's ears were clean but inflamed and there was a cyst in her right ear :( I asked about the itching and she mentioned it could be allergies, too. We ended up getting some Surolan ear drops. Squee hates getting ear drops and she always manages to get away, even if she looks like a cat burrito wrapped in a towel.
