Hi, I'm new to this site and have a new pal named Lily.  She is about 3 mos. old and was a gift from my daughter who knew I was desperately wanting a black kitten.  She is a rescue cat and believe me, it was love at first sight.  We are not a one cat family, both my daughters have cats. In fact, we also have a 1 1/2 year old dog that  I gave to my husband for his 65th birthday and they are inseparable.  My own dog died in March at the age of 14 1/2.  Ever since then I have felt a definite void.  I knew I didn't want another dog, but really wanted a black short-haired kitten.  We've had some pretty serious health issues, so I was waiting until things settled down before getting a new companion.  Well, to my surprise, my daughter who actually has the major health issue, on one of her good days, went out and found the exact kitten I wanted and text me with her picture.  As soon as I saw her, I knew it was meant to be and now after 5 days, she has done nothing but bring joy to me and my family.

It's amazing how one tiny little bundle of fur can make everything seem just a little better.  Thanks for reading this rather long introduction.  I'm looking forward to being an active member of this site.

Yes, there's nothing like watching a kitten play, or snuggling and purring, to make your day feel better.

That is such a sweet story, priceless!  I'm so happy that you found the kitty you wanted and have given her a wonderful loving home!

Thanks Angels Mommy!  The picture doesn't do her justice.  She is so beautiful with silky soft short black hair and green/yellow eyes depending on the light.  Lily has a wonderful disposition and is doing her best to fit in with the other animals in the house.  Everything is going so well, touch wood!  Anyway, she is such a sweetie and I know we will have many years of joy with her.

I currently fostering three black kitties. My cousin who is a FDNY actually adopted one I had a few months ago and he is inseperable from him now. He loves him so much. People have this myth of not wanting black cats because they are bad luck. I happen to find them beautiful . Good luck with your baby.. And I know the pain of losing a pet. I lost my russian blue Six, three years ago when he passed away in my arms suddenly from a massive heart attack. The pain is still there and I still cry over him, but I still have much love in my heart for all my other kitties I have adopted and to love all the fosters I have taken in and found homes for. All the best to you always.

Thanks so much!  I love black cats and once had a long-haired black cat that was the smartest cat I've ever met.  He would go for walks with my dog, he would wait at the end of the street while I did my shopping.  He was amazing.  He didn't just bond to me, he did to everyone in the family.  All our guests loved him too.  In fact, he was known on our street as the cat that was more like a dog because of him walking with us.  That cat died at 16 1/2.  This year, my dog died just one week after my daughter had surgery for breast cancer.  Talk about bad timing, not that there is ever a good time to lose a precious companion.  I waited to get a kitten once I was through some of the grieving process, but thought I should wait till my daughter was through chemo.  I was so empty inside though and really needed something positive in my life and to be honest, for the whole family.  It's not like we don't have other animals in our home, but we all kind of are responsible for our own and I was now left without a furry companion.  I love all cats and dogs and over the years have had wonderful companions of both, but this time I really wanted a black short-haired kitten.  I've never known a black cat I haven't liked.  I don't know what it is about black cats, but I'm just drawn to them.  In the past I've had a short haired female muted calico, a short-haired silver tabby, a Cornish Rex, orange long-haired male and female, tuxedo (very special companion to me), long-haired black male (as mentioned above), grey female, grey and white female, and now besides my new kitten we have living in our home, a beautiful grey, cream and  white long-haired 12 year old and a handsome white and black long-haired 12 year old.  Some on the list had lived together and others were either in pairs or started out as singles and we have added another cat or dog to the mix.  Needless to say, we are animal lovers and can't seem to live without a companion animal.  As close as I was to my last dog, I knew it would be a cat that I wanted for my companion and it seems like it is working out well.  She is filling that hole that I needed to fill and with the condition my daughter is in, she is adding entertainment as well.  She is very active which makes for some hilarious times.  This kitten couldn't have come at a better point in our lives.  Again, thanks so much for your kind words and as you can see, I feel black cats are fabulous, beautiful and if you research them, they have not always been thought of as sinister.  In fact, there was a time they were considered good luck.  In our case, I chose to think of our little one as a blessing.

Funny, we have at least 2 black cats at the shelter right now that are just too nice.  It's heartbreaking, because the likelihood of them getting adopted is pretty low.  I always pitch the black ones, telling people they will be saving a life if they adopt one!

Congrats on your new black kitten addition. Glad to see more love for black cats!

I adopted a black kitten last year from a rescue (after my dear old DSH had to be put down from  Cancer) and he's the first black cat I've ever had. Since that time I found out that black kittens are not as popular and tend to get put down more in shelters. So sad! He's the cutest thing ever and my husband and I are so glad we adopted him.... (my husband is a dog person too, but Magnus totally has him wrapped around his paw at this point ha ha).

Anyway, def. post some pictures of your Lily! Love black cat photos :)

He's Magnus, who's now 13 months old and is getting super long and big.

Here he is when we first got him (around 5 months old). Be sure to take lots of pictures of your new baby as they grow SO fast!

Mrblanche,  I know how you must feel about the black cats at your shelter.  Maybe if you told people what great companions they make and that in past times they were considered good luck, someone might be interested.  It really saddens me to think that people overlook a black cat just because of a superstition.  Good luck with getting great homes for all of your cats.

redvelvetone, I LOVE  your handsome Magnus!!!!!  What a precious fellow!  I posted some pictures of Lily in the picture forum.  In a couple of pictures, she is showing off her shaved belly where she was spayed.

I always tell people that almost all black cats are special, because they've been touched by an angel.  Didn't know that, did you?

Your Lily almost certainly has a few white hairs.  It was once believed that only a purely black cat could be a witch's familiar, so whenever a black kitten was born, an angel would touch it and cause a few white hairs to grow, thus protecting him from witches' magic.  Those few white hairs are called "the angel's touch."

I, actually, did know about that.  I guess I won't know if this kitten has any white ones until her adult hair comes in.  Also, so much of her belly was shaved for the tiny incision that the vet made to spay her.  For all I know, she could be all white there...LOL  Not likely, but I will be looking for those telltale white hairs.  My daughter had a jet black cat once and he had two white hairs, that's all, but they were there.  No one would ever know, but we found them.  Hey, even if there aren't any white hairs, being called a witch is not the worst name I've been called....LOL
