He acts so hungry. I bought the small bag of Earthborn Holistic Primitive today and thought I would give him about 1/3 cup for the day to snack on. He gets a 5.5 can of Earthborn Holistic wet per day. Split in to two meals. He is at a good weight now, but is constantly meowing when I get home.

My one cat does this. I was giving them about 5.5 ounces twice a day and my one cat would just stare at me, meow at me, paw at me.  Every time I got up he would dart for his bowl.  I felt badly for him.  someone here suggested to split the food in 3 meals.  This has worked much better. Maybe you can try that.  I am by far a cat expert, though - I'm still learning :-)

I appreciate the reply and I probably should have mentioned I can't feed him three times a day due to my work schedule. :( otherwise I would gladly do that for my baby.

I don't know what your schedule is, but they don't need to be evenly timed meals. I feed three meals - one in the morning before work, one at dinner-time, and one before bed. So the third meal is only a few hours after dinner, but it seems to help. :dk: Just a thought. :)

I could do tthat, but what are the cons to feeding a little amount of kibble?

I don't know which flavors you're feeding him, but if you're feeding him the grain-free varieties of Earthborn Holistic, they only have about 100 - 115 calories per can. This would work for a cat that weighs 5 - 7 pounds. Most kitties, depending on their metabolism and level of activity, need 15 - 25 calories of canned food per pound. That's why your baby seems hungry - he is. :rub:

When I was feeding my kitties canned food, most ate about one can a day. But those cans had 180 calories to 225 calories per can (the cats weighed 10.5 pounds to 13 pounds). My cats actually range from 7 pounds to 16 pounds - the bigger kitties ate more than one can, the smaller kitties ate less.

The feeding guidelines say to feed 1 - 2 cans per day. Seems like 2 may be more in order for your boy?

No. I feed the daily amount divided into three meals.
Ditto for me on their wet food.  I have a pretty set schedule for feeding but I don't think it would be a mandatory thing.  They also get kibble but the kibble is in the timed feeders and drops at differing times from the wet meals.

I second this.

I have two cats, Cookie (1 yr old, 17lbs) and Cuddles (11 weeks old, 5lbs). Cookie ate about 255 calories on canned (I think.
I'm bad at math) and Cuddles got about 125 calories. I found this information on a website a couple months ago, and that's how I measured how much food I should be feeding them...only problem is I can't find the website. I'll let you know if I do. Cookie always use to meow and beg for more food on canned, but when I switched her to a commercial raw diet, the begging stopped almost completely. (She still begs for meals when I'm running late
). They got about 5.5oz of food per day on canned food.

I thought it seemed crazy when I read last time someone said I should only need to feed 1 5.5 oz can. I will up him back to two cans a day and split it into 3 feedings maybe even 4 on some days.

I bought Pure Vita Turkey formula which has 181 kcal. So he will get an Earthen anand Pure Vita every day split in two to three meals.

Just keep an eye on his weight. I don't know how much he weighs, but now you'll be feeding about 280 calories, almost double the amount he was eating on just the Earthborn. My 12 pound kitties needed only 180 - 220 calories a day (they ate one 5.5 ounce can of food: the ones I had in rotation ranged from about 180 calories per can to 225 calories per can).

He weighs 14 pounds. According to the 20  kcal per pound figure he should get 280 a day. No wonder why he was crying so much. I was only taking the suggestion off here that average cats only need 5.5oz a day. 280 may be a little much so I will have to watch and weigh.

What were the brands that had the amount of kcal?

I love the Earthborn, but it is super low in kcal.

Thanks

Here's a chart wth a calorie count for a few different brands. . .not a complete list, and it's old, but gives you a basic idea of the usual calorie count in canned foods. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007IHY5CM/?tag=&tag=thecatsite
100 kcals per 5.5 oz is very low. I didn't know any were that low-cal :dk:
Yeah: A number of Weruva flavors, Soulistic, and Earthborn Holistic are the ones I'm aware of that are around 100 calories per 5.5 oz can.
