I would be interested as I know Kat-Kat has allergies

Getting 1 oz into Kat could be dangerous (for me, he's a big boy with a lt of muscle and very long sharp claws)

If the flea meds have cut down her scabs to 0-20%,I would say that's a pretty good indicator of the problem. Allergies can be residual and also just one flea bite can cause a flare up.

I would also discontinue flea collars if you already haven't, they usually do more harm than good.

I just joined after researching online and finding this thread.

My long haired tabby named Dolly was originally a feral living outside my apartment before I adopted her in October 2012, along with a tuxedo named Wren. Back in May I had a flea infestation and found Dolly to be the one who might have had most connectivity with the fleas due to dry white scab build up on the neck, head, and chin and scratching more often than Wren.

Dolly seems to have FAD and is allergic to any off the counter medicines. She started throwing up when I first started using drops and collars on her, so I'm now going to stop using off the counter for her and feed her a bland diet.

Before I get her checked by a vet, is there anything else I can do to help control her FAD?

Hi,

I have had discussions with some verts over the years and one vet even suggested that the constituency of the item referred to was nothing more than bicarbonate of soda. But i have used a product called Thornit. My cats are 'indoor cats' and i have no doubt that sometimes maybe they might like to venture out but it isn't possible from here. Fleas are not an issue. Pollen, they all enjoyed the balcony at our last flat and the problem with scabs only flared up once and fortunately with one cat. I applied Thronit powder directly onto the scab. I have found that it dries the scabs up quicker and that the cat is obviously so much more happy fairly soon after applying too. I hope this may help.

Hello.

My cat appears to have exactly the same problem (scabs around the back of the neck, patchy hair loss, recently started to loose weight) that you described and photographed previously.  I live on a remote island where there is no real veterinary service.  Please, can you tell me what your can'ts problem was and how you solved it?  Many sincere thanks!

I have the same problem too.  And my mom now  has a flea infested house thanks to me, so I still get bitten by fleas but the medicine I take kills them right after they bite me.

My scabs have  improved since I had a medicated flea bathe and the medicine.  My mom had to give it too me in a syringe hehe  Next time I will know better and run and hide.

I was lost when my new mom found me and very skinny  so it was not her fault   I had fleas.

I have had a very usual life  according the  doctor.  More about  that later  if I don't  get better  from all  the other  things  not right with me and I need your help :)

OH NEVER  give your beloved  pets any medicine you can  get over the counter  without asking the   vet  "IT"   could poison them!

My cat has the exact same condition. The vet diagnosed him with linear granuloma. Someone who replied earlier on mentioned ~~eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC) which is the same type of thing. By the way if you google it, the pictures will look far worse than what your cat has. My vet said it is called linear because the cuts are usually formed in a line. I have seen both cuts in a line and in round patches on my cat. Usually they are around his neck and at first I took off his collar because I thought that was the problem. The vet did mention that the condition does go away and come back several weeks later. I don't know if I agree with how he explained it but he said that the cat's body is being tricked and it thinks that a parasite is trying to get into the body so all of the cells (antibodies or whatever is in their body that would help - I don't remember what exactly) rush to the spot on the skin to try to push the parasite out and keep it from coming in (even though there is no parasite). That is how the cuts/scabs are formed. Sometimes he also gets a bald spot on the skin around the neck with no cut there at all. If I look closely I can sometimes see tiny black dots there. The vet gave us prednisone (a steroid) and said he should get half a pill twice a day. When the cuts go away, he can have half a pill once a day, then half a pill every other day and then finally no pills. He also gave us a cream to put on the cuts called Mometasone Furoate, USP Ointment 0.1%. The cream and the prednisone worked well but after he came off the prednisone the cuts came back several weeks later. The vet said it is really tricky to treat and might be ongoing. We put him back on the prednisone twice daily because he got a really big round cut/scab in the middle of his back. We also put the cream on it but he tried to lick it off so we can't use it or have to put a cone on his neck. It doesn't seem to be getting better so we will have to take him back to the vet. I also noticed my cat has been eating less the past few days. I know this condition can also cause ulcers in the mouth so I'm going to try to get a good look in his mouth tonight to look for ulcers and to see if that is why he is eating less. FYI... an easy way to give a cat a pill: 1. Sit behind the cat and trap him between your legs. 2. Hold his head up and pry his mouth open by sticking your thumb and pointer fingers by where his big front teeth are. 3. Drop the pill down and hold the mouth closed. 4. Use a syringe filled with water and stick the tip of the syringe under the side of his lips. Slowly push the water into his mouth so he is forced to begin swallowing. Do it slowly so he doesn't choke. Doing it from the side of the mouth makes it more comfortable for him rather than shoving it down the front. It works every time! Good luck!

Thank you for all the tips. My cat is a male. He is 8 years old. He weighs 18lbs. He is white and every summer same pimple breakout on ears, nose and chin. I hate taking him to the vet every month in the summer for the steroid shots. You mentioned Benadryl. IF he is 18 lbs how much would I give him.

Best to call the vet for the dosage. If Benadryl can be safely administered without a vet's supervision, they will know what kind of dose your cat should have.

18 pounds is an awful lot--is he a large breed, or is he overweight, or both? I'm asking because overweight cats occasionally have trouble keeping themselves clean, and that can exacerbate feline acne. It is possible to get cat-bath wipes to help an overweight or old cat stay clean. A washcloth works, too, provided one doesn't use anything that would be unsafe for the cat to ingest.

Hi there, wondered if you resolved the skin irritation problem. My cat has the same thing, just started early this summer. Maine coon, in case you think that makes a difference. Did you try the benedryl solution? Appreciate your comments. His irritation and hair loss is primarily over the eyes and down the back of his neck. And what cat food have you settled on? I'm not big into vets. Lots of money just to walk in the door....... Thanks.

Hi Jenn,

I would really like to try your suggestion of Benydryl liquid on my 4 year old kitty with the same scab trouble and

constant scratching.

May I ask did you get from vet or buy in store and

how much did you give?

thank you

This is very interesting, my mostly indoor female cat has similar scabbing around ears and neck .I haven't noticed scratching or fleas. There is a male cat lurking in neighborhood and I thought he may be causing injuries trying to mate w my spayed female? Don't males bite and claw during mating? I saw him on her once. We try to keep her in but she invariably gets out ,in fact she is meowing loudly wanting to get out as I write. Well now I'm wondering if it's allergies instead of horn cat??

I have bad allergies and break out in hives/inflammation. I use the childrens liquid Benadryl as a topical solution and apply it directly to the welts. My cat Oli has the exact symptoms you described to a T! I'm going to try and apply the Benadryl to her as a topical solution as well. Also, I use a wound wash (or simple hydrogen peroxide) to soak and massage the crust away while freaking out about the hair that comes with it... but if the Benadryl works as a topical solution... here's hoping!

Please note, I don't believe liquid Benadryl comes in any form other than the childrens version due to the main ingredient is used to manufacture illegal drugs.

Thank you so much for your insight and experience.  My cat, Guido, was showing signs of having ear mites, so I decided to try the over the counter mite drops.  He is an indoor cat, but we allow him to lay in the grass at times because he only has three legs and doesn't get far. Within a day of the drops use,  he was showing flaky skin around his ears and hair loss. I was thinking he was having a reaction to the drops, and now I'm pretty sure.

Thank you again. :)
