Five feral cats live in our pool/patio area in Naples Florida.. All are neutered. We feed them twice a day. They also hunt for food. They are free to come and go through a cat door. We like having them. They are our beautiful moving garden sculptures.
Recently I managed to catch on video an extraordinary behavior. Spice and Cleo are brother and sister and are about 15 months old. Spice either attacked Cleo or was trying to mate with her. As both have been neutered by our vet. Is it possible or probable that he was trying to mate. I've seen him biting her face once before?
I put the video on youtube. I'll embed the code here.

the last picture, them lying together, was made afterwards? Them being still good friends?

Some neutered males still know, more or less,  how to mate.  Especielly if they were neutered late.

Although they dont always remember exactly what and how to do it. It is often "something about taking a bite".  but WHERE, they know only very vaguely.

If they were very friendly afterwards, so it shouldnt have been an attack.

Either some sort of rough play, or some sort of mating.

Besides, AFTER a mating they often/usually become friendly, even if they before the mating had warlike courting play.

It could possibly beeing also some sort of dominance show. When the places had been once again established, they could be friends again.

So, I dunno for sure, but any case, it wasnt a hostile attack, no.

The big cat, Brutus, shown lying protectively with Cleo at the end of the video  was not the same one that attacked her.  Spice attacked her.

However, this morning I saw Spice, the attacker and his sister Cleo together on the dock.  Cleo looked wary.  Hopefully it is going to be alright.

I love how they all lounge around your lanai, laying on the recliners, so at home and comfortable.  When I think of feral cats I think of kitties hanging out around dumpsters waiting for the odd bit of garbage or the kind person who arrives once a day to give them a bowl full of kibble but who scatter at the sight or sound of any human.  Anyone viewing your video would assume they are your home kitties, which by now in a way, maybe they are.  I know I have a lot to learn about feral cats.

I hope the County doesn't think they are home cats I'd have to get licenses and all the shots .

Hi! and thank you for the video. The cats are all lovely. Especially Cleo. I do not think that was a "sexual" attack at all and it really was not truly aggressive either. My Wendell will do this to my white female, Perla from time to time. I just believe that there is a particular "pecking' order amongst a colony of cats. My Pipsqueak is like your Ringtail (hope I got the name right) in that Pipsqueak will come to Perla's rescue and chase off Wendall. I just think what you showed us on the video is pretty common amongst multiple cats living together. I think it could really just be that Spice likes to tease Cleo - and that he likes her. Cleo is the one who wants nothing to do with Spice and that might fuel Spice's desire to taunt her. That is how I see Wendall and Perla's relationship. Just a guesstimate though. Beautiful kitties!! :wavey:

Thank you so much for that information. This forum is very useful and informative.  Your explanation fits in.  Spice and Cleo used to be inseparable at one time. I suppose the newcomers broke that up and Spice is jealous.

Maybe I need a cat psychologist for my bunch. Fluffy seems to be very used to humans; we can pick her up. She must have been an abandoned or lost outdoor cat - she has claws. Probably because of her background, the big, alley cat types - Brutus and Ringtail - seem to treat her with disdain.  She follows them around everywhere but gets an odd puck (my Irish word for a cuff without claws) from them. Then we feel we have to give her some petting attention to make up for it.

Thanks again for your insight.

Oh my gosh - YES - that explains the issue with Spice going after Cleo then. AWW poor little man, he is absolutely missing his private life with Cleo. It is always a gamble adding more cats into the mix OR when more cats show up disrupting an already established group. Throws everything off kilter. Hopefully in time, they will all work things out amongst themselves. Not much you can do about it, they have to manage that on their own. Sometimes, though, it is hard to watch the interactions. AW Fluffy sounds very sweet and loving. She has a good life with you and is lucky she found you both. I love your analogy calling them "beautiful moving garden sculptures" who need love, care and food. :lol3: Glad that you found TCS!!!:clap:

Good news . I saw Cleo and Spice spending time together at the edge of the pond. Not rubbing heads but checking out something moving in the water together.

SEE - they are still friends :rub: :heart2: I also see Wendall and Perla bird watching from the same window on some days. That makes me smile BIG! Because I know deep down Perla does not hate Wendall - she just wants him to NOT tease/taunt her. I think in time Spice will adjust to the other cats being around and that Cleo and Spice will find some "alone" time and peaceful moments.:clap::clap:
