Not sure where to post this so I'll post it here....

More and more I am reading that it is ok for cats and kittens to eat grass.  I've been reading where it helps with hairballs and digestion.  And that this is normal.

So is this normal?  My kitten is INDOOR and will never be left outside.  So if cats should eat grass, how do indoor kitties get it?

Anyone with expertise out there?

you can buy 'cat' grass at pet stores -- live or in a kit you can grow yourself, kind of fun to do.

Earlier we had another thread about the definition of cat grass. Turns out there is no such thing - it is just another name for oat or wheat grass.

If you are concerned about hairballs, get a comb to brush your kitty. Cats who are combed and brushed regularly don't get too many hairballs.

Some cats like grass. But they don't NEED it. So if you want to grow some, sure, but it's not a necessity.

One day after hubby came back in from mowing, we found River eating the grass that was stuck to the side of his shoe lol. I told her she didn't need to do that and I would buy her her own grass!! We got one of the little kits and both the cats loved it. It's not something we keep around all the time (it dies after a few weeks), but it's a nice little treat when I think about it.

Visited someone a friend has rehomed a cat with, and she grew grass - normal grass - for her cat.  She has green fingers, loads of beautiful Bonsais in her garden.  I don't know why commercial grass is oat or wheat, but they are just another kind of grass really.  Mine eat it in the garden from time to time.  If you decide to grow some, only do a tiny tray at a time - palm- or hand-size.  Grass grows from the bottom so as long as you look after it it will keep growing for some time.

Agree, my cats love it but it's not a real need.

I grow Oat or Wheat seeds from the health food shop, my cats and even young kittens love to eat it and they don't throw it up like they do normal lawn.

Trying to find out if it's OK to let my kittens have a go at pots of cat grass ? I am going to keep the indoors until Spring, i.e. until they have been neutralized. And as they are quite longish-haired, perhaps they need the fresh plant fibres to keep their tummies in order ?

The funny thing is that it's nothing but normal grain  (like wheat, barley or oat) !  Imagine how happy our farmers would be to obtain the same price per kilo for their wheat harvest, as we pay for the dainty little (organic perhaps even !!!) bags of grains for our "cat grass" !
If you live in the country side, I am sure a nice farmer would be happy to give you a good scoop of wheat for free

My 13 year old loves grass, and I grow wheat grass indoors year round.  Yes, it is just the bud of a wheat stalk the seed come from.  So you can let a pot you grow turn to seed and then use those for future crops. I try to start a new pot a few weeks after the first ones is established, then there is always fresh grass.

It is not something they need, more like a treat.  I've noticed Cricket will sometimes eat it to bring up a hairball or to settle his stomach.
