I was looking for a little bit of advise.  My cat, Dexter, has been so scared of the fireworks from the holiday that he didn't come out to eat at all yesterday.  He also went to the bathroom on the floor, threw up, and hid under the bed (which is very unusual) for 17 hours straight.  I couldn't get him out no matter how long I coaxed.  This morning I took him to the ER vet just to make sure that something serious wasn't happening.  He has never been afraid of fireworks before so I was skeptical that that was it.  The vet ran blood work, checked his urine, etc and found that he was minorly dehydrated so they gave him subcutaneous fluids and prescibed Xanax to help with the anxiety.  Its helped (although he seems wasted) but he is still so terrified.  Is this normal?  Also, how long does dehydration usually stay when it sets in?  I was going to go out of town this weekend overnight but I'm trying to decide if I need to cancel my trip (which isn't being received well by the boyfriend at ALL!)  If anybody else has gone through this before I would appreciate it!  Thanks!

My kitties get upset with the sound of fireworks but it usually doesn't last much longer than the noise, but we are not too close to them so the sound is a somewhat muffled.

How close are you to the fireworks?

Your poor kitty! hope Dexter recovers soon. Sorry I have no real advice for you.

Well, I live in a small city and the fireworks are all around.  It seriously sounds like there's a Civil War reinactment going on outside my house. Its freaking me out some too!

Needless to say its been a rough day.

Awwww. My kitties hide when there are fireworks going on, as well. Candy, my Rainbow Bridge kitty, was terrified of fireworks. She would lose control of her bladder, and get sick to her stomach as well. Poor kitty was a bag of nerves until she was sure that there was nothing going on anymore. I had rushed her to the vet many times for this, but they concluded it was just nerves as well. It could just be a case of kitty anxiety!

Hope your kitty feels better! :vibes:
